General terms and conditions of employment
Information Communication and Technology Manager
The National Museums Northern Ireland was established by The Museums (Northern
Ireland) Order 1998 and comprises the constituent parts of the Ulster Museum, Ulster
Folk and Transport Museum, Ulster American Folk Park and Armagh County Museum.
This is an indication of the conditions of appointment and is not intended to be
exhaustive. A full list of details is provided within the contract of employment.
Contractual Terms
Hours and Attendance - This is a permanent, full time post and the successful
candidate will be expected to work 37 hours per week and in addition will be required to
be on an on-call rota.
Salary - The post is graded on the Staff Officer salary scale currently £27,111 - £30,520.
Appointment - This appointment is subject to satisfactory completion of enquiries into
health, character and criminal vetting procedures.
Fitness for Work - All applicants are required to be fit for the complete range of duties
as outlined and will be required to complete a Health Declaration Form.
Financial Benefits
Pension - Staff are eligible for membership of the Nuvos pension scheme as operated
by the Principal Civil Service Pension scheme. Further details of the terms and
entitlements under this scheme will be made available upon commencement with
National Museums NI (including information on the Life Assurance Policy)
Leave Entitlements
Annual Leave - In addition to 12 public holidays, annual leave entitlement will be 25
days, rising to 30 days after 5 years’ service.

Overall Purpose of the Job:
Working directly to the Head of ICT, the postholder will be responsible for co-ordinating and providing
wide ranging support for the National Museums ICT services. Such services will include the maintenance
and support for networks and systems, hardware and software support, PC’s and associated peripherals
and operating systems.
The postholder will be expected to take a very pro-active role in developing and designing ICT solutions in
our galleries and exhibitions, and ensuring the efficient and effective delivery of information technology
and telecommunications systems for National Museums.
The postholder will also contribute to the development of the ICT strategy, standards, policies, and codes
of practice and play a key role in overseeing their implementation. In addition to this, the post is also very
much a hands on support position requiring a high level of technical knowledge and ability to apply this to
daily tasks.

National Museums Northern Ireland was established by The National Museums & Galleries (NI) Order
1998, and comprises the Ulster Museum, Ulster Folk & Transport Museum, Ulster American Folk Park and
Armagh County Museum. W5 is a wholly owned subsidiary operated under a separate management
structure.
Our sites are interconnected by a Wide Area Network (WAN). The existing infrastructure consists mainly
of a cluster of HP Blades running VMware ESX4.1 connected to a fibre attached Storage Area Network
[SAN] hosted at our Ulster Folk & Transport site. This WAN consists of a Microsoft Windows 2008 R2
Active Directory domain, hosting a variety of systems including Microsoft Exchange 2010; Microsoft SQL
2008 cluster; Microsoft IIS; Microsoft DFS, Citrix Access Gateway [CAG], Citrix XenDesktop, Ubuntu and
Oracle. Some of the applications that we host include the collections management system, ticketing,
bookings and resource management system and the integrated HR and payroll system, and the finance
system.
Duties and Responsibilities:
1. To co-ordinate and deliver the provision of a wide range of ICT support services on a day-to-day
basis, to include networks, servers and desktop support, managing and prioritising the work of the
technical team.
2. To ensure high levels of network security are maintained at all times, including systems, in line
with the Museums ICT Security Policy and Best Practice.
3. To manage all network support and management functions in conjunction with the Head of ICT,
to include firewall maintenance, virus prevention, hardware installation & configuration, server
configuration in a virtualised environment, third parties, troubleshooting; and ensuring that all
documentation is kept up to date.
4. To manage the day to day maintenance of hardware [Servers, PC’s, virtual desktops, printers,
firewalls, etc.], software support and network systems, internally and through the engagement of
appropriate external support providers.
5. To provide installation and maintenance support to system owners for a range of corporate and
departmental databases / systems.
6. To manage the day to day maintenance [hardware and software] of any technology solutions in
the various exhibitions and galleries across National Museums.
7. To co-ordinate the licensing of software throughout the organisation, ensuring that good
operational procedures are in place and that the organisation works within relevant guidelines.
8. To assist in the development of strategies, standards, procedures and codes of practice and
oversee their implementation and maintenance. To assist in the development of key documents
such as the IT Service Continuity Plan and the IT Policies and Procedures Manual.

9. To manage the implementation and maintenance of effective backup strategies [including the use
of a variety of technologies such as replication, DFS and tape drive technologies] and business
continuity planning, including the testing of the plan on a regular basis.
10. Ability to test and install network cabling to cat6 standards.
11. To contribute technical expertise to the development of new IT systems, including technology
solutions for galleries and exhibitions.
12. To maintain a full inventory of IT resources and to provide timely information to the Head of ICT
to enable the maintenance and update of the Fixed Assets Register in respect of all IT equipment.
13. To assist the Head of ICT in the specification and procurement of new ICT hardware / software.
14. To assist in the development and delivery of the ICT training programme, ensuring that close ties
exist between the support and training functions.
15. To liaise with the Head of ICT in relation to the monitoring and review of hardware support
contracts with the principal aims of ensuring that all critical equipment is covered, that an
appropriate level of cover is provided, and that value for money is achieved.
16. To be a key member of the ICT Committee and other relevant ICT groups, deputising for the
Head of ICT as required.
17. To keep up to date with compliance with e-Government and other business initiatives.
18. The postholder may be required to work out of hours on occasion.
19. Any duties of an IT nature as may be required by the Head of ICT.
