ISSUE 13
MAY 2005
Parish Council News:
The next meeting is on Monday 16th May at 7.30pm in the Village Hall. The
earlier time is due to the annual Parish Council Meeting taking place afterwards at
8.30 pm.
Matters of interest from the last Parish Council meeting held on 14th March:
The Chairman would be meeting a representative of the Highways regarding
provision of parking facilities at AMOS (Ashby Magna Open Space).
The request for an additional post box in the village has been turned down by the
Royal Mail.
A letter from a parishioner asked if an information sheet could be prepared and be
distributed to newcomers giving details of all amenities in and around Ashby
Magna. The Parish Council had already produced a sheet on these lines four years
previously but it was agreed it needed a considerable amount of updating and it
was decided to do this. ** See note below.
A request from the Parochial Church Council for help to defray the cost of grass
cutting in the Churchyard was accepted with £200 to be contributed.
Seven planning applications were discussed.
**Anyone who would like any local activities, clubs etc included in our
Welcome pamphlet

Ashby Magna Horse & Dog Show
Saturday June 11th
We are rapidly approaching the show date and the organising team are working
hard behind the scenes to ensure everything runs smoothly on the day. A few
days before the event the show ground will be set out with roped off areas and
the jumps set up, this does not take too long if we have plenty of help so if you
can assist, even for ½ an hour please contact one of the names below.
On the day we need help with car parking, again if we have plenty of volunteers
the shifts will be short, so pleas help if at all possible. If you cannot help in the
above ways, or even if you can, the catering stall need cakes etc to sell, your
contributions would be very much appreciated.
This is quite a large undertaking for our small village and I think reflects a lot
of credit on Ashby Magna so please come along, meet some of your fellow
parishioners and enjoy yourself in the process.

An Ode to Drivin’ Slow
It’s taken time but they’re here at last
Have you seen who’s come to town
The dragon’s teeth sit on old forge road
Their sole purpose ------ to slow you down
The road is marked for all to see
The teeth are like a jaw
Please slow down and heed the marks
Or you will break the law
A lot of work has taken place
So tell your family and friends
To drive slowly through your village
And be careful on the bends
If you see a speeding car
Obviously committing a crime
Tell them what the speed limit is
Before they kill someone in their prime
If Farmers could warn the drivers
So they can slow down too
For when they have finished collecting the milk
I am leaving it up to you
Gilmorton road is also thought
To have cars go speeding down
A thought about the residents please
So don’t drive and act like the clown
We know the village runs alongside
The busy motorway
But let’s not treat the village like this
And keep accidents and fatalities at bay
When the Farmers in their tractors
Drive fast when passing by
Just think if you hurt a little one
Oh!! --- how you would cry
Some thought and co-operation
Is all I’m asking for
So those who live around here
Get safely to their door

Dear Friends,
As the more observant of you will have noticed things at St Mary’s church have changed a bit!
And although the churchwardens Francis and Janet have kept you very well informed to-date via
the newsletter I thought I should also write to explain a little more.
Following the Revd Dr Charles Doidge’s retirement this time last year the Parochial Church
Council at St Mary’s opted to join the Avon Swift Group Ministry with effect from 1st July 2004.
We are a group of ten, now eleven, parishes, reaching from St Andrew’s Peatling Parva in the
north to St Thomas’ Catthorpe in the south, working together to witness to the Christian gospel
and serve the communities. There’s a Team Rector – Ken Baker, who lives in Swinford; a housefor-duty priest – Glenn Martin, who lives in North Kilworth; and me, the Team Vicar, and I live
in Gilmorton.
Once a month we come together as a Group to worship in one of the parishes. Otherwise regular
services are held in each of the parish churches – which at Ashby Magna means a service of
Holy Communion once a month alternately at 9.45am or 6pm – plus other special services
throughout the year. As you will appreciate it is business as usual – we are here for those
important occasions of baptisms, marriages and funerals. We continue to host the occasional Fun
Factory for the younger villagers. Our parish lunches still bring villagers together for fellowship
– and something hot to eat! Yes, we have some serious work to do to keep the church building
open - but we also have a care to help the people in Ashby Magna meet and engage with God
meaningfully.
So that is us. Please find my contact details below if you need me. And do let us know what you
would like to see the church doing in this place.
I look forward to hearing from you!
