Parish Council News:
Parish Council News: The next meeting is on Monday 16th January in the
Village Hall at 8.00 pm, please bring your questions and observations on any matters
relating to the village.
The last meeting held in November discussed the following items:
Ashby Magna Open Space (AMOS).
Concerns have been raised regarding the land boundary around the open space. The
Council is investigating options to address this issue.
Quite a lot of work has been done clearing the brambles etc, which are choking the
trees next to the open field, and the conifers have been removed.
The volunteer group British Trust for Conservation Volunteers have done this work;
anyone interested in helping either with AMOS, or generally, could contact the
Editors.
Funding from Shire Grants is to be sought to help in getting the Open Space into a
more manageable state.
Footpaths
Concern has been expressed over the state of certain roadside footpaths in and around
the village, the District Council has been advised and we await developments. *
Parish Council Precept
Financial strategy for the financial year 2006/7. It was agreed to keep the precept at
last year’s figure, this will result in slightly less per household, as there are more
houses in the village now.
Planning
Two planning applications were considered. One was for two houses to be built on
the old Chase site in place of the already agreed one (this in addition to the two
already under construction). The Council vigorously opposed this, these sentiments
to be passed to the planning department.
Future Dates
The following dates were set for the Council meetings for 2006:
13th March
11th September
15th May
13th November
10th July
All at 8.00pm in the Village Hall apart from the one in May which starts at 7.30pm.
*Any problems relating to the roads and footpaths can be reported direct to

Pub Games Evening
On Friday, 9th December, Ashby Magna held its first Pub Games evening in
the village hall. Eight teams of four battled it out with darts, bagatelle, Devil
amongst the Tailors (table skittles) and Northamptonshire (hood) skittles.
Judging by the shouts coming from the various corners of the room,
reputations were being won and lost.
At the half way point, the competitors enjoyed a sausage, mash and onion
gravy supper followed by mince pie and cream.
At the end of the four rounds, points were totted up and the two highest
scoring teams went forward to the grand final. Topping the scores with 2130
points were the Peveril Devils consisting of Tony and Chris Fahy and Arthur
and Joan Kenney. A close second with 2027 points were Santa’s Streakers,
alias Rob and Jennie Wright and Bob and Dilys Withers.
The final consisted of a round of Jenga in the middle of the room with
everyone watching intently. As the wooden tower got higher and more
unstable a number of amazing ‘extractions’ were performed by the
participants accompanied by loud roars of approval. However, ‘the piece de
resistance’ came from Bob Withers who in one swift movement removed a
single piece of wood separating the top and bottom sections of the tower.
Unbelievably the upper section dropped squarely onto the wood below and
refused to topple. The game continued for a while longer until the unlucky
Joan Kenny removed the losing piece.
For those who like statistics (and the competitors might be interested to
know):
Devil amongst the Tailors
Winning team: Cicely, Sue Jan and
Frances.
Highest individual score: Jan Talbot
Bagatelle
Winning team was Rob, Bob, Jennie
and Dilys
Highest individual score Tony Fahy
Darts
Winning team: Val, Jacky, Caroline
and Julie
Highest individual score: Arthur
Kenney
Northamptonshire skittles
Winning team: Tony, Chris, Joan and
Arthur
Highest individual score: Julie
Gamble
Judging by the constant laugher and barracking throughout the proceedings
and the very positive comments made at the end, its safe to say that a very
good time was had by all. It may even turn into an annual event!!

SCAM Alert
You may or may not be aware of some of the tricks being used to part us
from our money, if not here are a couple:
Phone rings and you are told you have won a prize, to claim this phone
the given number, the cost of your call can be up to 1.50 (pounds) per
minute and they can keep you on the line for ten minutes or more.
Buying on Ebay, money is offered above the amount required for the
purchase and the buyer says you can send him the difference to him as a
tax fiddle or some similar story, his cheque then bounces.
PS If you have any information regarding scams etc send details to the
Editor so we can warn others.
