MEMORANDUM TO: KIC Tribal Health Clinic Patients
FROM: Jeff Eertmoed, Chief, Pharmacy Department
RE: Filling of Prescriptions from Outside Providers
In an effort to improve patient care and align our policies with IHS Pharmacy Standards of
Practice, we will no longer be able to fill prescriptions written by private providers for their
private patients.
This change is necessary in order to meet accreditation standards, and IHS Pharmacy Standards
of Practice, both of which are significant to this organization, and are crucial in providing
consistent medical care to all patients. Availability of visit information, diagnosis, labs, etc. is
critical in the provision of proper pharmaceutical care. This information is not available when a
patient goes on their own to a private provider.
Exceptions to this policy include the following:

Patients seen in the KGH Emergency Room

Patients referred out from KIC to either a local specialist or another Native Health Organization

Patients with prescriptions from other Native Health Organizations needing medication on an acute basis
(traveling without med, etc).
Prescriptions presented according to any of these exceptions are also restricted to the formulary
requirements of the KIC Tribal Health Clinic Pharmacy.
