c/ Process of establishment:
Our research of transplant to create Agarwood was over 20 years. From 1985, Mr.
Nguyen Hoang Huy had thought about creating Agarwood on Aquilaria ( Do Bau ) tree in
Tien Phuoc - Quang Nam. The test got the result in 1990, was sucessful in 1995 and was
officially announced in 1997.
Do Bau Huong Company registered as official legal status on March, 2004, included
04 founder members:
1- Nguyen Hoang Huy: the first person who studied and succeeded the way of
transplant of Artificial Agarwood on Aquilaria agallocha Roxb in Vietnam (the
client).
2- Nguyen Thi Dan: former lecturer of HCMC Medical and Pharmaceutical
University, Doctor of Givey hospital, the person who contributed his opinion to studing
the transplant of Agarwood (collaborator).
3- Le Van Long: Managing Director of Do Bau Huong Company.
4- Pham Ngoc Sinh: former Managing Director of Thien Sinh company.
d/ Staffs: Now there are 100 persons. It will be increased 1.000 persons in
estimation as begin transplanting Agarwood and exploiting products.

g/ Target of company and requirement of project:
Include 8 main targets:
1- Respond to the program «Act for environment« of Organization board of
competition « Vietnam creative day-2005 » and answer to the policy of The State: Promote
the international trading integration to bring source of foreign currency to the country. This
project is a good opportunity to solve the environmental issue and promote the national
economy.
2- Recreate and use reasonably precious natural resource, we will actively
recover, build, and develop raw material areas of Do Bau Huong trees to create
Agarwood, a kind of old forestry tree had its name in botanical red book with risk of
extinct, made it as a kind of important industrial and agricultural crops in new period.

3- Thanks to superprofit value of Artificial Agarwood will attract Participation of
community in Planting Do Bau Huong tree in the wide scale, that both contribute to
renovating environment, and develop economy of family and society.
4- Treat the waste of human and cattles usefully: Keep the waste to make fertilizer
for the plant, that both decrease the investment expense and solve waste matter that
cause environmental pollution.
5- Pave the new way for taking advantage of land fund in our country, covers bald
hills with green trees, recreate forest with high economic value, and help to minimize
natural disasters caused by forest destruction before that make floods, drought, erosion,
and have great damage for national economy.
6- Use great man power source in country, contribute to solving job for most of
employees, minimize social evil and help economy to develop.
7- Transplant and create and supply Agarwood, source of precious
pharmaceutical material, spice to the great demand of the world and produce necessities
for the health and improving the life of people.
8- Develop economy and urbanize rural areas, improve the life of people, increase
the educational level with special concern of compatriot in mountainous regions, ethnic
groups, to bring comfort, happiness and prosperity to peasants on their own land.
h/ Process of implementation of project:
Project started in 1997, at the begining, we initiated and supplied breed plants for
local peasants in districts of Quang Nam province (Tien Phuoc, Tien Ky, Tien My, Nui
Thanh etc....) to plant in the small scale, then it would be gradually spread in the whole
country.
i/ Financial source:
- The first capital source: Self-reliant capital of members in company with
collaboration and investment of keen leading peasants. Our policy is to mobilize, instruct
and support people to work together in the spirit of volunteer of brothers.
l/ Projects finished:
From 1997-2004, begin to implement project of: « Planting Aquilaria tree (
Aquilaria agallocha Roxb) to produce Artificial Agarwood » with each pilot step
everywhere.
This project begins to implement in districts of Quang Nam province:
Tien Phuoc, Tien Ky, Tien My, Nui Thanh etc.... then spread over other places of the
Central (Quang Ngai), provinces of plateau area (Daklak, Lam Dong), provinces of the
Southeastern Region (Tay Ninh, Binh Duong, Binh Phuoc, Ba Ria - Vung Tau and test in
the western: Cai Lay (Tien Giang), Long An etc....
j/ Have not had financial aids yet:
In the past few years, we have not had any financial aids yet, we only use selfreliant capital with collaboration of peasants who have investment capacity (money for
breed plants, fee of taking care). Therefore, range of activities is still individual, limited,
small, and scattered in the whole country, not focus on building large raw material areas
of Aquilaria tree as forest because of lacking invested capital.

With achievements obtained, we want to develop project in the range of the whole
country, extend sample model to build raw material areas of Aquilaria trees in 5
provinces of the western highlands and in suitable lands and to attain efficiency of
environmental renovation, and to create the source of Precious Agarwood to supply to
the demand of the whole world and to promote economy of rural areas.
Therefore we insist on receiving financial aids of The State, The world bank or
investment collaboration of brother companies, plantations, Agro farm or individuals who
have capacity and confidential.
k/ The project has considerable success in the trial period of 7 years (19972004):
- Take Take Aquilaria tree out of the risk of extinct.
- Acclimatize successfully a kind of rare and precious forest trees to grow in the
garden, farm land, forest land behind field, mountain land and everywhere in country
(provinces of The western highlands, the Southeastern Region) with precious
experiences, including to test in some places of the western Viet-Nam .
- Initiate forcefully the movement of growing Aquilaria tree on a large scale of the
whole country to develop economy and improve environment.
In last three years, cultivated area of Aquilaria has increased quickly, the cultivated
area of Aquilaria was estimated 6.000 ha (in 2002), reached 10.000 ha (in 2004) and it
will increase upto 15.000 ha in estimation in the coming years.
- Many keen individuals become rich by selling breed plants, manipulating
Agarwood, exploiting, producing Artificial Agarwood, that lead to the formation of some
companies purchasing breed plants, product of Agarwood etc....
- Pave the new way for peasants in revolution of changing variety of plant when
other agricultural trees have unstable price.

The environmental issue is global issue for long time ago. Recently 24 countries
had meeting to find orientation to solve effectively the environmental issue to protect
human and creatures in this world to be existed and developed well.
The process of building our country with the key is that: to develop economy and
improve environment, has an importance and mutual interaction, as lip with teeth, as fish
and water that cannot be separated.
Project of developing « Grow Aquilaria tree to create Agarwood » is the capacity to
solve both matter of life and death. Therefore we hope to bring the innovation of
Transplanting and creating Artificial Agarwood on Aquilaria tree to apply to the people of
the whole country to build raw material areas of Do Bau Huong trees in the wide scale
after many years of study.
Planting Aquilaria tree and producing Artificial Agarwood are the new breakthrough in
the field of planting, to contribute to the variety and firm development of agricultural
economy of our country, to help most of peasants to enrich in their own lands and
contribute to building the country.
Agarwood is precious product, that is agglomerated in the body of Aquilaria tree, a
kind of perennial forest trees. Value of Agarwood has been confirmed from the past
thousands years as its uses.
That is source of rare and precious pharmaceutical material and Spice. In thousands
of natural Do trees, only one tree agglomerates Agarwood. Therefore, before only kings
could use Agarwood. Agarwood is considered precious thing, is spiritual gift. “Keep sagebrush in mouth, to find Agarwood", formely people experienced many smokees, go to the
deep forest, high mountains, sometimes they had to lose their lives on the way of finding
Agarwood.With absolute exploitation of human: Forest drain, Agarwood become
exhausted, Aquilaria tree face with the risk of extinct.

I- BASIC ISSUES RELATED TO
AQUILARIA TREES AND AGARWOOD:
A- GENERAL:
1- Definition:
Aquilaria tree is also called Agarwood tree, Do Agarwood tree, Toc tree.
Science name: Aquilaria crassna Pierre ex Lecomte or Aquilaria agallocha
Roxb.
- Family: Thymeleaceae.
In the world, there are about 25 kinds of Aquilaria that only grow thinly in Indochinese
countries.
2- Classify Aquilaria in Vietnam:
According to the experience of the people, there are many kinds of Aquilaria as
followed:
+ Aquilaria agallocha Roxb is also called “Do Xot” tree or “Han” tree that have
capacity of agglomerating Agarwood with high quality in nature. This kind of tree gives
Agarwood and high quality of Agarwood.

+ White Aquilaria, Black Aquilaria, “Luoi Trau” Aquilaria have lower capacity
of agglomerating Agarwood (used to make incense).
Besides there are many trees of Do family but it is not Aquilaria, it is Do Me used to
make paper; Do Niet, Do Day, Do Nghe, Do Ho, Do Dia, Do Ngoi used to make artificial
Agarwood.
B- ECONOMIC VALUE OF AGARWOOD:
Agarwood of Vietnam is highly appreciated in the world thanks to high quality, therefore
Agarwood of Vietnam is very expensive in comparison with Agarwood in India, Indonesia
and Singapore.
Agarwood has daily been scarce, therefore price has been increasing higher and
higher in the last decades. From 1992, Agarwood of Vietnam was not for exporting.
The survey of Agarwood Market in Ho Chi Minh City before stated:
In 1980, Agarwood of type II has the price: 1.200 USD/ kg, type I: 1.700 USD/kg.
To 1998, Agarwood of type II has the price: 1.733 USD/ kg, type I: 2.455 USD/kg.
Offer price of type V is 200 USD/kg, type VI is 100 USD/kg.
Agarwood exported to Japan with price is 2.000-10.000 USD/kg, increased to
15.000 USD/kg in 2000. Attar of Agarwood is sold with the price of 15.000 USD/ litre (in
2000). In recent years all companies that extract attar of Agarwood close and stop
operating because no material is available any more.
Commercially, before 1991, Vietnam export 10-15 million USD every year. The
growth rate of export is about 5 tons/ year in 1970s to 50 tons/ year in 1980s and
decreased to about 10 tons/ year in 1990s.

Agarwood price is over 20.000 USD/ kg (>350 million VND/kg)
Attar of Agarwood in the worldwide market is 50.000 USD/ litre.
In one article of H.A.F in Tuoi Tre newspaper, Thursday November 13, 2003, with
the heading: “Economy of Lao and opportunity for Vietnamese businesses” had the last
part:
“ … At the beginning of commercial value, one breed Agarwood tree with the price
of 1 USD was from 600-800 USD, after seven years of growing to have attar to make
perfume in industrial countries.”
C- USE OF AGARWOOD:
Property of Agarwood is peppery - hot, bitter and tepid.
In reality, Agarwood is a kind of product with high economic value, and is used in
the following fields:

To make the fragrance, make up all kinds of high-grade perfume such as Sental,
Nuid’Orient, to make soap with high quality for the kings before.
2- Pharmaceutical material:
Is rare and precious medicament and has the use of treating many diseases.
a/ In oriental medicine:
* Exterminate miasma:
They have usually fumigated Agarwood in house to exterminate toxic gas and have
always had Agarwood with them to prevent from miasma. In some places, especially in
Phu Khanh region (Khanh Hoa and Phu Yen), they have always packed Agarwood in
cheese – cloth bag to carry in the neck as “talisman”. Children under one year old will
carry 2 taels, 1 to 5 years old will carry 3 taels, adult will carry 5 taels.
* Use to make antipyretic medicine and exterminate fever:
In Combodia, according to doctors Menaut and Phana Doul, they always use
Agarwood, Agarwood and ivory ground with cold water to drink, 2-3 times per day, from 3
cm to 1 tael each time.
* Medicine for colic:
According to the doctor Sallet, traditional medicine has very good medical prescription
for colic included: Agarwood 2 taels, simmer with nutmeg, areca seed, magnolia skin, Sa
nhon, Can khöông… in one and a half of water cup of 9 cm and have twice per day that
will to make your stomach not to writhe in pain.
* Treatment of urination disease:
They have always brought Agarwood in under region of abdomen to treat the
urination disease.
* According to Oriental medicine, Agarwood is used to treat disease caused by climate,
to exterminate the flatulent, colic, vomit, asthma, rapid breath. It is ground from 3 “phaân”
to one tael, depending on age to mix with cold water or put into boiling water to drink.
Contraindication:
+ Agarwood is miscarriage medicine, therefore pregnant woman should not drink or
bring with themselves, can make miscarriage.
+ The asthenics and anorexy, liver failure… should not use Agarwood.
b/ In western medicine:
Agarwood has antibiotic, that create strong antibody (sterilize, to heal the pain) and
can treat some heart diseases (chest pain, heart failure), respiration disease (asthma),
phsychiatry (sedation, treat insomnia, relieve pain, keep calm diseases of digestion
(colic, feel sick, diarrhoea), diseases of urinary organs (urine retention) etc… Today in
the world (Japan) is studying and using Agarwood to treat some diseases of cancer.
c/ Other fields:
 Diplomacy: to make gift.
 Religion: use Agarwood to make incense to worship.
 Manipulate hmanycraft: Agarwood statue, ornament thing, interior design,
jewelry etc.…
 To make valuable paper (painting, write bible…)

D- CHEMICAL COMPONENT OF ATTAR OF AGARWOOD:
Good type of Agarwood agglomerates in the body of Aquilaria tree with the
component that can dissolve in alcohol up to 40-50%. After soup by KOH, then distil
steam, will have about 13% attar. In attar, the main component is Benzylaxeâtoân C6H5CH2COCH3 (26%), Meâtoâxybenzylaxeâtoân (53%) and Teùcpen alcoân 11%. Besides
there is Cinamic acid and its derivation (Cinamic acid, acid B-fenilacrilic - C9H8O2,
C6H5CH-COCH3) mass mol.148,15)

II – SOCIO-ECONOMIC CONDITION OF COMMUNITY :
Vietnam is a country with the main and long tradition of living by agriculture. Most
of peasants keep their land, and their village ; they are industrious, hard working, patient,
and through ups and downs of the country and unhesitate hardness and difficulty.
Therefore, agriculture is field with the high nature of society, and always has the
concern from the Party and The State and has preferential mechanisms, policies for
investors to help the life of people in rural areas to develop economy as well as other
aspects (culture, education, health etc....)
However, because the Vietnam society experienced many years of fierce war, the
building of the country in the peaceful period faces with many smokees. The State has to
face with many difficult issues in the period of receiving government and settling politics.

1/ Period of exploiting to the end of resource of forest with rare and precious
specialties that is natural Agarwood in the boddy of uncultivated Aquilaria tree (19751992).
In the war time, Agarwood was exploited not much. They dared not to go to forest

because they were afraid of bomb. Therefore, at that time Aquilaria tree growed and
jostled as sugar cane in Truong Son forest and other mountains in our country from the
North to the South, including island (Phu Quoc).
After the peace was resettled, some poor persons from everywhere rushed
stealthily to mountains to exploit furtively the natural resource of country. Because of
comming profit, they did not think carefully, only wanted to have everything that they
could for their lives. They cut down rare and precious forest trees without mercy, sawed
Agarwood, digged to the every roots to find Agarwood.
Agarwood is very precious, agglomerated in the boddy of Perennial Aquilaria tree
(about ten years old) with rare rate. In the thousands of Aquilaria trees, the forest only
has one tree with Agarwood. If they are lucky to find Agarwood, they will become rich
quickly. If not, they will lose their power, there are some persons to lose their lives in
sacred forest, unhealthy climate.
In this time, Agarwood market in the Central was in heat, it was very busy in a rush

export & foreign trade company.
Therefore Agarwood is found very harshly, Aquilaria tree in primeval forests is
found and cut down as their wishes. Series of forests of Aquilaria trees are wiped down,
choped down in « mopping movement to find Agarwood« . Forest drain, forest is
desolate, destitute. Natural Agarwood has been decreasing, then it becomes exhausted
under the cruel exploiting hand of human.
Because of lacking of experience, they cut down without mercy all Aquilaria trees
that they saw.
Formely perennial Aquilaria trees were very immense and verdant, contributed
very important role to the protection of environment, ecological conservation in our

and take them home to grow in the garden.
Huy growed Aquilaria, mobilized some persons to participate in growing Aquilaria
in Tien My village, Tien Phuoc district - Quang Nam as according to Mr. Vo Khe, Nguyen
Quoc Trinh, Pham Huu Canh. Then Mr. Huy drew his own experiences during the
process of caring, nourishing. Then he managed and thought about mechanism to create
Agarwood in nature day and night, Mr. Huy found, tested by intended actions as he
created to excite the gathering of Agarwood sap in the body of uncultivated Aquilaria tree
remained in the gardern of people and in many trees that can be reared and grown.
Artificial Agarwood created by Mr. Huy in 1990, got some results that were very
satisfactory at the begining, and it deserved to have its name in the golden page of
history of Agarwood of Vietnam with many smokees:

3/ Period of achievement ( 1997-2004 ):
Initiate movement of growing Aquilaria tree to create Agarwood.
Success at the begining of Mr. Huy to make government and local people
enthusiastic and was known by many persons in the whole country.
In 1997, after improving the method of transplanting Agarwood and increasing the
effect as expected, Mr. Huy begin announcing his success to everyone. Reporter, Huynh
Van My in Quang Nam wrote:
« Tien Phuoc – New country of Agarwood « on the magazine « Science and Life » and
« SaiGon Times », July-1997.
From the Central, Mr. Huy began buying and preserving some remaining Aquilaria
agallocha Roxb (Do Bau Huong trees), cultivating seed and multiplicating Young
Aquilaria trees, growing by himself and mobilizing peasants to plant Aquilaria trees to
create Agarwood right in their garden. Movement of growing Aquilaria tree that was
mobilized by Mr. Huy with peasants of Quang Nam raised strongly and become high tide
with each turn of Artificial Agarwood of Mr. Huy putting in the market, as seisms broke
out and expanded everywhere.
Then so far there are Quang Nam television station (2000), Ho Chi Minh City
television station (2004) and Binh Duong television station (2004) to make report and
about 20 articles about the Transplant and creation and exploitation of Artificial
Agarwood from Aquilaria trees grown by peasants from Agarwood of Quang province
leaded by Mr. Huy.
Mr. Nguyen Hoang Huy is person who raised the flag of growing Aquilaria
tree to create Agarwood with success reverberated all over the country.
In 2004, Mr. Huy with collaborators establised officially Do Bau Huong Company,
exhibited Artificial Agarwood in Vietnam - International Agricultural Trade fair in Phu Tho
sports & gymnastics center, Ho Chi Minh City (23-29 September-2004) and got the
Golden medal of Aquilaria breed plants.

B-General situation of our country after liberation:
Need to have one mechanism of changing variety of plant to attain high economic
efficiency.
Because agricultural economy of our country is not stable, the price of many main
types of plants before was fallen, therefore an urgent demand is to find a kind of new
plant to make breakthrough into the field of plant .
In the last decade, sometimes some plants bring satisfactory economic effect to
the people such as rubber plant, pepper, cashew nuts, coffee and some fruit trees:
longan, durian etc..... Some gardens become richer thanks to the leading of growing
many these trees. Therefore, peasants rush to investment in growing many popular trees
with high income.
Then there were a time that the situation of exporting latex of rubber tree in the
worldwide market came to a standstill, latex of rubber tree was stagnated, spirit of some
gardens were staggered, they jumped to cutting down perennial or just growing rubber
garden to grow many other trees such as coffee, pepper, cashew nuts, longan.
In recent year, most of peasants have fallen into tragedy of economy: price of
products of plant is not stable, sometimes it increases, sometimes it decreases, and
sometimes the price falls seriously.
Today, when the value of rubber comes back, many persons have no rubber
garden to have latex to sell.
Instead, there are many longan gardens, pepper groves everywhere that were
invested by the garden for many years, when begin to crop, they are at the point of death
because the situation of falling price is terrible, the amount of selling product is not
enough to pay the labor fees to gather fruit, not to mention the invested capital was spent
during the process of cultivating plants.
Peasants invest from loss to loss, some gardens have to quit, feel deep grief
looking at longan, pepper grove being nude and dying, they do not know what to do and
grown on their lands.
The main plant before as coffee also has many ups and downs. Many persons
cannot live with price of coffee falling with heavy debts, they have to leave all the funds
for investment in many years, leave rural areas, rush to the city to earn their living by all
kinds of jobs. Lives of many peasants household are very difficult, afflicted, poor and
hard, and they do not have any capital to continue cultivation.
The disastrous economic situation of the gardens can be many reasons:
- Cannot compete with the worldwide market (such as pepper, cashew nuts,
coffee),
- The worldwide economic situation in some countries is also disordered that
influences to Vietnam.
- Market of agricultural product in country is redundant because the peasants
develop spontaneously, therefore they have not found yet the effective methods
to solve the output for agricultural products to obtain the satisfactory source of
profit.
Therefore, the mechanism of changing variety of plant reasonably and
effectively in the term of economy with capital support is an urgent demand today
for peasants.

Socio-economic condition in recent years has caused many serious consequence
to our country. Today it still exists many important issues that should be overcome soon
and quickly to solve effectively such as:
1/ Issued of recovering precious natural resource (Do Bau Huong trees Agarwood) is very imperative issue:
Firm preservation, building, development and use of natural resource of forest is
imperative and reasonable demand.
The danger of draining forest from post-war period exhausted precious resource of
primeval forest, Natural Agarwood is not available any more and Aquilaria tree face with
risk of extinct.
The successful transplant to create Agarwood is the main dynamic to save a kind
of rare and precious forest tree. Produce of Artificial Agarwood source to replace Natural
Agarwood announced its own end is that devote the precious thing to life, bring benefit
not only to people in our country, but also to the whole mankind in the whole world.

afflicted to most of people living in the high land. Drought increasing in regions ourstern
highlands with flood happening in provinces of Melkong Delta in recent years caused
great damage to farm products, make serious damage to person and materials and
cause difficulty to the life of people in the whole country and influence the development of
economy of country.
Solving to the every roots the issue of natural disasters cannot be treated lightly,
therefore it should recovered forest, grow forest.

International Agricultural Exhibition fair in September 24, 2004 (in Phu Tho sports &
gymnastics center): « In the next 10 years, although Aquilaria trees are developed and
grown, Vietnam will only supply 30% demand of Agarwood in the world... »
Although we grow many Agarwood trees, it is not enough to answer the real
demand, therefore we do not worry about the issue of supply beyond demand as growing
fruit trees, other industrial crops etc.… Moreover, for Agarwood we can take the initiative
of exploiting. After transplanting catalyst, the longer it is, the more the value of Agarwood
is.
3- Issue of changing variety of new plant in agriculture:
As Do Bau Huong tree is a kind of forest trees, it is easy to grow, to live. Previously, it
grew uncultivatedly and scatteredly everywhere in our country from the North to the
South and in deep forests. Today the fact that acclimatize and take this precious forest

In nature, Agarwood wood - Agarwood is very rare and precious. Agarwood is a
type of the best Agarwood with very high value. In thousands of uncultivated Aquilaria
tree of tens years old, only one tree agglomerated Agarwood with high quality is found
out.
That is because the change of wood moleculars under abnormal action of factors:
trauma, diseases happening for many days in the boddy of tree such as: tree chapped,
branch of tree broken, hammer carved, bomb, bullet or trespass of all kinds of creatures:
insects, microorganism, fungus develop… it is considered as existence capacity, creating

can process the method of transplanting Agarwood.
Drill each group of three holes (8-10cm, deep in heart), each hole is apart 2-3cm, each
group is apart about 20cm according to spiral shape around the body of tree from the
root to the top, including big branch, then bring catalyst (liquid form) to absorb deeply into
the holes.
d/ Result:
After 6 months of transplanting catalyst, each Do Bau Huong trees with enough
above condition begin having agglomeration of Agarwood but leave it for 2 years then
exploit it, in average we can have Agarwood of: 2kg type V, 2kg type VI.
Some cases we can have Agarwood of type IV, III, if leave it for many years. Thus it
shows the transformation of Agarwood in low grade to Agarwood in high grade, can have
the product in the highest grade (Agarwood of type I, Agarwood) with the time is long
enough (6-10 years) .
Growing Do Bau Huong trees can transplant Agarwood, effect can reach up to 95%
as expected.
According to the study of Mr. Huy, depending on the group of Aquilaria, we have
capacity of agglomerating Agarwood, but the level is different depending on the type of
variety. Aquilaria trees does not belong to Do Bau Huong with fibre, the wood is quite
solid, it is difficult to squeeze for all kinds of insects, the pain is healed quickly and skined
over, therefore the capacity of agglomerating Agarwood is only 1/3 - 1/2 of Do Bau
Huong.
In the begining, as not have enough experience, Mr. Huy and many persons
cultivated many types of Aquilaria with source of varieties.
After many years, Mr. Huy studied, researched and thought, compared and
evaluated agglomeration of Agarwood on many types of Do Bau remaining.
Then good fortune smiled with him, fortunately Mr. Huy found out mother Do Bau
Huong trees with capacity of agglomerating Agarwood with the highest quality
uncultivated in the garden, « out of the area of labor», in remote area of the Central. For
this reason from recent 10 years Do Bau Huong Company tried to preserve source of
precious varieties, each year the quantity and quality increases to supply the source of
precious varieties for life.

3- Compare effect to create Agarwood of other methods:
a/ Method of transplanting Agarwood of the World Academy (1999):
10-year Aquilaria tree will transplant Agarwood, each 3-5 years, one time again.
Each year transplant Agarwood 01 time, transplant 3 years as followed:
o The first year transplant in the West.
o The second year transplant in The North.
o The third year transplant in the East.
Each time use 50 g powder of Agarwood to transplant into the body, the procedure is the
same as engraft upon the tree.
After 10 years of exploiting Agarwood, each tree can have 4-6kg Agarwood of type IV. If
transplant Agarwood of special type in Aquilaria tree, then will have Agarwood of type II.
Compare with method of Mr. Huy (2-6 years), the method of transplanting Agarwood
of Academy should take quite long time (10 years) and reach Agarwood with high quality.
b/ Method of transplanting Agarwood of America and Group of Rain forest:
According to Patent of America No. 20020194780, dated May 24, 2001, suggested
that created the artificial pain on the wood of Do tree by drilling hole with the depth of 110cm into the heart (xylem) and was ventilated by attaching one ventilating pipe.
Besides, some other methods were also uses such as transplanting microorganism,
spraying mechanics.
This solution was implemented by the Group of “Rain forest“ in An Giang and Phu
Quoc in the project of “Creating source of Agarwood in Vietnam“, but they did not have
the result as expected. The product is only Toc Agarwood, containted small quantity of
attar with low value, to grind powder to make incense, not have the Agarwood in the
grade. (confirmed by Mr. Henry Heuveling Van Beek, Director of this Organization,
recorded by Nong Khac Y reporter – Nguoi Lao Dong Newspaper, Monday, December 9,
2002).
c/ Method of transplanting Agarwood of Doctor Thai Thanh Luom (Deputy Director
of Agricultural and Develop Rural Department of Kien Giang).
Apply the solution of transplanting fungus, nutrience, catalyst to the pain on tree
(in which the fungus is one developing in Do tree injuried that is subdivided and bred in
suitable nutrient environment and catalyst plays the role to bring the fungus to approach
libe cell (phloem)).
However this solution gives product of Agarwood with low quality and probability
of success is not high.
d/ Method of transplanting other Agarwood of the people:
According to their thinking, some persons tested the transplant of Agarwood as

- There are some persons who also drill hole into the body tree (not follow any
specific rules), then use some mechanics such as Baz, DEP or weak acid (Acid Sulfuric,
Acid Clorhydric), 3 fero-clorua to excite agglomeration of Agarwood sap.
However, we do not have many products and they have toxic mechanical members
such as Cl, sulphate (S) in product, they is not highly appreciated and warn health of
people.

C- How many people does the project impact directly on?
Total number of person who the project impact directly on in estimination is
10.000 persons included:
1- Households of peasants:
Build the raw material areas in Bao Lam district, Lam Dong province at the
begining is 100 ha: 100.000 trees.
On average, each households of peasants grow 1.000 Do Bau Huong trees.
Thus, have 100 households of peasants participate directly in project in theirland in
the first turn. Each household have 5 people on average.
Project will continue extending to 1.000 households with the numbers of trees
invested in building raw material areas Do Bau Huong is one million tree. Thus the
numbers of peasants who are under the direct effect of project is 5.000 persons.
2- Project managing committee for 14 years: included member, staff of Do Bau
Huong Co., Ltd and Authorized organization representing households of peasants in
region implement the project: 100 person.
One family member on average havs 05persons. So 500 persons are under effect
of project.
3- Labor force participate in the process of producing Agarwood.
- 300 persons who transplant of Agarwood in the 5th year.

serious consequences to community and the country: forests trees, rare and precious
animals are gradually extinct, environment is impacted disastrously, natural disasters
increase, great damage for national economy and make the most of people in community
have more smokees in life.

to develop economy and overcome all consequences before, have to make a ideological
revolution: by the true labor to create of materials not by stealling, bleeding, sweeping off

« Do Me » has the large, solid body of bud, has branch slowly, its skin is dark
color, leaves are long. Aquilaria has the soft body of bud, skin is white, the standing
position is quite tilted, has branch quickly, leaves are large, thinner than leaves of « Do
Me ».
« Do Bau Huong » discovered by Mr. Huy at the begining is very few that uncultivated
naturally in Tam Thanh commune, Nui Thanh district, Quang Nam province thanks to
remote place, «out of the area« of those who hunt Agarwood.
« Do Bau Huong£ trees cultivated for many years, now begin croping fruit to have
seed, therefore from many years, the quantity of new variety is better, it is not the same
as previous time when « Do Bau Huong » breed plants is very rare.
B -FEATURE OF « DO BAU HUONG « TREES:
1-Feature of form:
Aquilaria under the type of the high wood tree of 30-40 m, have grey skin, have
fibre, leaves are alternate, thin board, tapering or oval of spear shape, pointed in root,
slim in the top, length of 8-10 cm, width of 3,5-5,5 cm, have the edge inflating as ring, the
color of front side is green, shiny, smooth, the back side is lighter and have soft hair.
Leaves are very bitter and not have acrid taste, especially young leaves.
Flower is in group, axil have hair. Fruit is dry, boll, pear shape, have fine hair,
length of 4 cm, width of 3 cm, thickness of 2cm. Seed only have one main part in the top
with the cone shape and lengthen underneath, outside skin become wood, the upper
side is soft. Tree often bloom and bear fruit from May to June and fruit is rippened from
Many -July.
2-Biological Feature:
The wood of Aquilaria Agallocha Roxb is softer than all types of other Aquilaria,
therefore saplings is soft and plastic. Perennial Tree have capacity of forming a kind of
special product, that is called Agarwood but it is very rare. Based on agglomeration of
sap in fibre of Agarwood we have: Toc, Agarwood wood, hay Agarwood.
- Toc: have little change in wood tissue, form black lines as hair (often used to
make incense).
- Agarwood: because of degeneration of wood elements is much more than Toc
but it does not complete, make the gather of sap tree in brown or black (use to distil
attar).
- Agarwood: do not have completely wood tissue, only remain resinous matter
plastic of attar of Agarwood, have dark brown or black, green, yellow, white. Agarwood is
heavy, deep in water and have bitter taste, often form in the core of Agarwood tree.
3- Ecological feature:
Aquilaria tree often grow naturally in topical forest. The height is from 300 – 1.000
m, gather in the height under 700 m, the slope over 25 degree.
Temperature is suitable from 15-30 degree C, rain fall on year from 1.200 mm or more,
dry season is from 3-5 month.
Uncultivated Aquilaria tree in many types of lands: Grey red land, yellow red,
Feralit land. The formation of Agarwood in nature has relation with type of land, mother

stone where tree grow develop. All types of yellow brown feralit lands form in mother
stone, schist, sandstone, the numbers of trees have Agarwood and the formation of
Agarwood has commercial standard is higher than trees develop in red brown feralit land
formed in Granit mother land.
Aquilaria tree is tropical tree that is often green all years round, we hardly se
leaves falling by season, that kind of tree refers shadow and often like to live mixed forest
with big leaves, tree can regenerate by the shoot and seed. Seed only bud in empty land
in thin forest. Often grow separately in each clump of 5-6 trees.
4- Distribution between regions in the world and in our country:
In the world there are about 25 types of Aquilaria that have capacity of
agglomerating Agarwood with very different quality, gather in Indochinese countries.
In China, Aquilaria trees grow in some provinces of the North of China, especially
in Guagdong and Haûi Nam.
In Combodia, Agarwood often grows distractedly in forests along the coast.
- In Lao, Do Bau grows in thick forest. For many current years, Mr. Thoong
Philavong (Lao of Vietnamese extraction) grew with the form of farm about 20 ha.
- In Vietnam Aquilaria trees have Agarwood uncultivated scatteredly everywhere in
regions:
+The northern: Hoang Lien Son, Vinh Phu, Hoa Binh, Ha Tay,
Quang Ninh, Bac Han, Cao Bang, Lang son, Ha Nam.
+The Central: Thanh Hoa, Nghe An, Ha Tinh, Quang Binh, Quang Tri,
Thua Thien, Quang Nam, Quang Ngai, Binh Dinh, Phu Yen, Khanh Hoa.
+The western highlands: Gia Lai, Kon Tum, Ñak Lak.
+The north: Binh Thuan, Lam Dong, Binh Phuoc, Binh Duong, Dong Nai,
Tay Ninh, An Giang, Kien Giang, Phu Quoc island.
Especially along the length of Truong Son route, but because of uncontrolled
exploitation of people, now Aquilaria tree is very rare in remote areas, where “the
hunters” of Agarwood has not set the foot yet. The exact determination of distributing
Aquilaria tree has not been asserted yet by any project.

- Color.
- The formation of Oleoresin and agglomeration of Agarwood.
The most precious Agarwood is a kind of perfect Agarwood, not strong and solid
as Agarwood but its Oleoresin is sticky like glue, some can rub as tablet.

Bau Huong” trees are very suitable to growing with other trees such as pepper, cashew

first of all do not have to cut down any tree that was already cultivated (take available
source of benefit to breed tree to save).

Vietnam is endowed by nature with very suitable weather and land to the
growing of Do to create Agarwood. Aquilaria tree like hot and wet weather and can live
in many kinds of lands: the best is red bazan soil.
Status of suitable phagotare is farm land, land of poor forest, forest behind field or
garden. Preventing the land from flooded, alum, salt or soil in the surface of limestone is
should not grow Aquilaria tree.
2-Collect and preserve variety:
Choosing tree to take variety more than 10 years is the best, it has regular shade,
its body is straight without pestilent insect. Collect ripened fruits on May – July, the fruits
have apricot yellow and self-fell, they collect and leave them naturually in 2-3 days so
that they can all ripen, then dry them under the light sunshine from 12-14 hours to seed
out off the fruit. Then take it to cultivate immediately. If they have not been cultivated yet,
have to preserve in wet sand by the ratio 2/1 (sand/ seed) by volume. Leave them in cool
place, often mix seed at least 3 times per day and keep wet sand. Although it is, the time
to preserve seed cannot last more than 10 days, the longer the time is, the more ratio of
bud decreases.
3- Cultivate seed:
One thing should pay attention is that as choosing and buying seed, today in the
market of variety, there are many types of different Aquilaria mixed together, if it is not
seed of Aquilaria, or the ratio of Aquilaria seed is low, the damage of time, invested
capital is small problem, but damage of profit is very big problem. This is explained is of
that invested capital is small, time of investment is long and profit is higher from
thousands times to hundreds times in comparison with invested capital.
Soak varieties in 3-4 hours in permanganate with concentration of 0,1%, then
clean it out, take all flat seeds, addled seeds then sow them. The numbers of seeds is
0,2- 0,25kg/m2. Creen powder soil or fine sand covering the seed about 3cm. Often
water seed so that it is wet enough to bud. Beds of sowing seed have to make trellis, the
canopy is about 50 - 60%, spray Bayphyzan with the concentration of 2-3ml/1 bottle of 8
litre periodically in 4-5 day, spray all the face of leaves.
To make bag for saplings by Polyetylen with the dimension of 12 x 25cm, in bottom
make holes. Soil in the bag includes 85% rich soil (can use a half of rice husk, coconut
fiber and a halft of sand soil), 14% of muck and 1% of phosphate (according to the
volume), mix well.
After sowing from 30-40 days, saplings are from 6-8cm high, have 2-4 leaves and
can be pulled up to transplant into the bag. Where put the bag of tree, should water wet
in advance so that tree is in the bed to ensure roots of tree contact with land, the body is
straight. Continue watering and make trellis for tree.
Many peasants, after treating seed by fresh water (three boiled waters, two cold
waters) cultivate. Not use mechanics of antcide (avoid ant eat bud of tree) but use duck
egg shell burnt, put into the mortar to grind fine then sieve powder on creen of cultivating
tree, one time in many days until put tree into the bag of 12x 25cm.
Experience of peasants show that Aquilaria tree is very sensitive with mechanics,

therefore they only use organic fertilizer for saplings, as spraying fertilizer for tree, should
be careful with concentration of mechanics using.
Special “Do Bau Huong” breed plants of Do Bau Huong Company are transplanted
microorganism when they are in the gourd of land to increase the rate of agglomerating
Agarwood later.
4- Plant trees:
a- Time of planting trees: The best time is at the beginning of raining season.
b- Method of growing: Depend on the type of land, form of phagotare.
+ Monoculture:
- If grow on farm land, forest land behind field, according to method of group
of equilateral triangle: tree from tree1,2-1,5 m; group from group from 2-4m. Density is
1.600-2.000tree/1ha.
- If grow on all types of poor forest: tree from tree 2 m, row from row from 10 12,5 m. Density from 400-500 tree/ha.
+ Interculture:
Is very suitable because trees like the shadow, develop quickly as they live
together with many other trees. Therefore, in the work of changing mechanism of plant,
we do not have to cut down many trees that are available but put in the pepper grove,
cashew nuts grove, coffee grove, tea grove, amomum garden, all types of fruit tree or
short-day trees such as pineapple (ananas), bean family, corn family, melon family,
capsicum family etc. … take available yield to breed Do tree (save).
Particularly, rubber plant should not grow together with Do Agarwood tree because
it develops quickly and have large canopy.
* CHART OF PLANTING DO TREES AGARWOOD:
Therefore growing by group of equilateral triangle, tree from tree 1,2-1,5m, group
from group 2-3m, row from row 2-4 m.
Benefit: Growing by group of triangle minimize expense of drilling and transplanting
to create Agarwood later (stand one trellis, drill three trees). As trees were transplanted
with catalyst, because of many pains, it is easy to break the tree by the stron wind. We
can hoop one group of three trees: top with top - root with root together as one group to
protect the tree.

c- Method grow:
* Treat phagotare:
+ For all types of poor forest:
Before growing, should treat phagotare by the tape, the width of tape is 1/3 – 1/2,
the average height of forest. Should treat the whole phagotare tape, root is cut down not
more than cut down 15 cm, chop fine, arrange neatly, then dig a pit to grow on the tape,
each tape of one row of tree.
+ For all types of forest behind field:
Treat phagotare comprehensively, chop small, clear out then dig a pit to grow by
the row.
- Dig a pit: dimension 40x40x40 cm. Mix well 1/2 land + 1/2 with ash of rice
huck so that the soil is soft then put tree, cover the hole. Not need to put
fertilizer first, until the tree take roots will put fertilizer gradualy.
- If we want to put down fertilizer, the best way is to use microorganic fertilizer.
As digging to leave the top soil layer on one side. The work of digging pit has
to complete before growing 1 month. Use muck: cow feces or buffalo feces
(14% feces +1% phosphate)). Use top soil layer to mix well with feces to cover
the hole. If use NPK to put down basic fertilizer, according to the ratio of
25:58:17, use about 0,5kg for 1 pit. Pit covered has to be the higher than
natural ground of 2-3 cm. Covering the hole and puting down fertilizer
have to complete before growing 7-10 day.
This is the type of forest trees, should not use many fertilizers. High protein level can
make trees sick easly and die. Should not use pig feces. Chicken feces are good but
hot and only manure as trees are over 2 years old.
+ For garden: Treat around the root of tree with diameter of 1-2 m for trees
in the garden that do not impact on Aquilaria tree.
d- Growing technique:
During the process of transport, roots of trees can be touched. As receiving
saplings, the gardens should leave in the place with shadow to monitor, take care for a
time (1-2 week) so that they will be good before growing. Accustom trees gradualy to get
used to sunshine, wind. Not water tree for many days to leave the bag dry, solid, then
grow them, after growing, water trees. Choose many strong trees to grow first, many
quite weak trees have to nourish for a time. If leaves fall, gather as a clump, use fertilizer
to feed leaves (by the instruction on the bottle) for tree so that trees take roots and have
leaves again. When root of tree dies totally, scrape skin of tree roots until not see the
green but only dry yellow, it means that tree totally die and cut it down.
Choose days have consecutive light rain, the weather is shady and fresh without
autum wind to grow.
Should be careful, gentle and clever not to make the gourd of land broken

because if the bag is broken, the rate of tree died will be high
According to the experience, to minimize the rate of tree died, we will plant trees in
2 periods:
- Period 1: Use sharp knife or scissors slit around the part of nylon in the bottom of
the bag and remove it, still keep the part of nylon on the top of gourd of land (to minimize
the small bag broken, tree roots cut).
Use hoe to enlarge the heart of pit sufficiently for putting the bag, the depth is
higher than the height of the bag from 1-2 cm. Then put the tree neatly, the body is
straight, the bag leans on one side of pit, cover the land and stuff (keep the part covering
nylon around the small bag). Pile the soil up around tree roots higher than the natural
ground 4-5 cm. Not grow in the middle of pit to avoid root collapse.
- Period 2: leave it for about one month so that the tree will get used to new
environment of land gradualy and when tree roots is stable, we dig up lightly tree roots,
use knife to slit one line down to nylon bag containting the gourd of young soil previously
and take nylon bag away to free totally the gourd of land so that the tree roots can
develop freely.
* ONE THING SHOULD BE MENTIONED AS PLANTING “DO BAU HUONG” TREE:
- As just growing, tie tree down the pile to avoid moving roots as have strong wind.
- Trees like shadow. If they are grown alone, it can shade saplings by coconut
leaves. Cut coconut tree leaves down into 2, into three, then cover evening sun in
backing sun days in the first year.
- Reason to make tree die is that the bag is broken, roots are cut or have
situation of stagnant water, increase moisture in the gourd of land.
Therefore spray water, not too soaked the bag or tree roots. As trees have yellow
leaves, check the moisture of land. If the moisture of land increases, trees catch fungus
easily (use Anvil or medicines anti-fungus in roots by the instruction in the bottle).
As trees have strong vitality, if the roots of trees are touched, leaves fall, branch dry, it
is not quite that tree died, we should have to take care, tree will have new branch. Only
after 1 month of taking care but trees do not have leaves, then trees will be considered
really died.
- In raining season, should earth up tree roots quite higher than ground, clear pools
of water near tree roots, dig ditch to drain water to avoid stagnant water in roots to
increase the moisture of land, roots are flooded, trees die easily.
- In dry season, for many day should water enough for tree to develop quickly. Not
water quickly into tree roots to protrude roots, trees will be damage.
- Should not plant trees at the begining of dry season because of the situation of
backing sun, lack of water that can make tree cannot live.
5- Take care of plant:
a- Regulations of taking care:
Trees that have just been grown should be taken care according to the following
regulations:
- The first year: Take care from 1-2 times.
- 2nd year to 3rd year: Take care 2 times per each year.
- From 4th year until forest close canopy: 1 time in each year.

b- Technique of taking care:
- Grow saplings that were died in the first time of taking care of the first year or the
next year. Choose good trees with dimension equivalent to trees growed. Bed emits
liana, shrub and wild grass in the garden.
- Turn over the soil around tree roots as a round shape with diameter of 0,8 to 1m for
the times of taking care from the first year to the 3rd year.
- Apply additional fertilizer for trees with 50g of NPK (2 nitrogenous, 1 phosphate, 1
potassium) or muck in the round turn over the soil. Each year, manure 1 time in the first 3
years.
- For method of growing by the tape, slit to prune, cut down tree in tape to adjust
shadow so that in the 4th year, Do Agarwood trees are exposed under the sunshine
totally.
- Not use herbicide, insectcide or other mechanics as turning over the soil because the
broken tree roots can draw mechanics and to make tree die.
- If use herbicide, spray it to the grass, away from tree roots.
6-Protect forest Do Bau Huong to create Agarwood:
a- Prevent from pestilent insect:
- Worm eating leaves often appear and destroy from April to August every year.
Method of extermination is to use Trebon with dosage of 1,5-2 ml in 1 litre of water
then spray for tree or Fastac 5EC or breed yellow ant on Do Agarwood forest.
According to the experience of people, can exterminate worm eating Do leaves by using
Camphor hanging in branch tree or pouding and mixing with coconut oil and spraying on
leaves
b- Prevent from burning forest:
Prevent from burning forest. In places where it is easy to cause fire should have
boundary of preventing from fire. Prohibit from cooking, burning bee in Do Agarwood
forest. Not let person and cattles destroy forest.
III- PLAN OF IMPLEMENT:
- Time of implementing project: begin on 2005 and finish after 15years, enjoy
two cycles, each cycle is 7 years. 15th year will liquidate contract.
- Plan of implement:
* « Do Bau Huong » Company will co-operate with peasants of Bao Lam
district- Lam Dong province to grow Do Bau Huong tree to create Agarwood, has
responsibility of supplying breed plants, transplanting and creating Agarwood and
exploiting, consuming Agarwood later.
* Local authorities will represent for peasants to sign Contract with company
by conditions and terms negotiated stated in Contract as receiving and delivering
breed plants to peasants.

* Peasants will plant trees directly on their land with legal sovereignty, try
their best to take care, preserve during the process of contract.
+First of all,
in the period 1 (6-7/ 2005), Do Bau Huong Company will deliver 35.000 Do Bau
Huong breed plants free of charge to peasants to grow, take care and preserve.
Gradually if will be supported capital source, company will continue investing in
breed plants to build one large raw material areas in districts of Lam Dong
province.
+When trees are 5 years old, company will transplant to create Agarwood.
+ And the 7th year exploit Agarwood and solve output (CK1).
The first cycle as croping Agarwood, leave root to enjoy the 2nd cycle, also
repeat the process of transplanting to create Agarwood as the first cycle. In 14th
year contract will be liquidated and will uproot, roots. The profit will be calculated
and distribute to members who participate in by the general negotiation.

leaving root, after 6 years (only invest = half of the first cycle, transplant Agarwood,
continue collecting benefit, about over 500 USD- 1.000 USD / 1 tree/ 1 cycle because the
longer tree roots are left the more agglomerate Agarwood with high quality.
If separate between the gardens and company, each side also obtain profit over
3,75 Billion VND (250.000 USD) , the fruit is a source of great profit.
NOTE:
All kinds of Other Do Bau can crop as above 1/3-1/2 profit because the capacity of
agglomerating Agarwood is lower than variety of Do Bau Huong.
+ Target of agricultural land that The State brought out is to get profit: 50 million/ year/
1ha.
+ While planting Do Bau Huong tree, income can be about 500 million dong/ year/ 1ha,
truly is one supperprofit source but do not have any kind of tree can compare.

creative day will be put into public treasury of breed plants to peasants by Do Bau Huong
Company.

4- Ask for support:
If we can, we ask the Organization board of competition of The world bank for
supporting part of expenditure of project at the begining is 10.000 USD so that the
company contribute to investment of breed plants and distribute free of charge to
peasants (do not have to pay).
We signed with government of Bao Lam district that will supply 35.000 Do Bau Huong
breed plants (in the first time, June, 2005) to peasants to grow and continue in the next
times to build raw material areas of Do Bau Huong large.

While the peasants are at the standstill with all types of other plant, the
development of Planting Do Bau Huong tree is one economic revolution, revolution in
the field of plant in mechanism changing variety reasonably. The farmers can keep their
garden tree and grow alternately Do Bau Huong trees into empty place without any
harmful effect.
That is the best solution to solve pressing issues today, to make disappear
difficulties obsessing and burdening in the mind of many persons: Issue of protecting
natural environmental resource, improving environment, restoring “lung”, reviving a kind
of rare and precious forest tree, preserving source of invaluable Agarwood for life; to
minimize natural disasters and develop economy etc....
If the model is extended in the whole country, in one place spread over many
places, in one group of people extend in community, then Heaven is not only above but
is right in this country, people will become rich and will not be poor because of poor and
