CHAPTER 5 PRACTICE SHEET # 2
Factor:
1) 33 x 2  x  14
Solve:
4) 7 x 2  17 x  6  12
2) 3 x 2  10 x  8
5) 5 x 2  x  20  2
3) 4 x 2  12 x  9
6) 3x 2  14 x  8  0
7) The length of a rectangle is twice as long as the width. If the length is increased by 4
and the width is decreased by 3 the area of the new rectangle is 100. Find the dimensions
of each rectangle.
8) A farmer plans to use 21 m of fencing to enclose a rectangular pen having area 55 m 2 .
only three sides of the pen need fencing because part of an existing wall will form the
fourth side. Find the dimensions of the pen.
9) A garden plot 5m by 15m has one of its longer sides next to a wall. The area of the
plot is to be doubled by digging up a strip of uniform width along the other 3 sides. How
wide should the border be?
10) Find 4 consecutive even integers such that the product of the first and second
integers is the same as 10 more than 5 times the largest integer.
11) A punter kicked a 41-yard punt. The path of the football can be modeled by
y  0.035 x 2  1.4 x  1, where x is the distance (in yards) the football is kicked and y is
the height (in yards) the football is kicked. Find the maximum height of the football.
12) On fourth down, a team is just out of field goal range. The punter is called in to
punt. To avoid kicking the ball into the end zone, the punter needs to kick the football
high and short. This punt can be modeled by y  0.088x 2  2.5x  1, where x is the
distance (in yards) the football is kicked and y is the height (in yards) the football is
kicked.
a) Find the greatest height of the football
b) If the punter kicked the ball 40 yards away from the end zone, did the ball reach the
end zone? (Show all work)
