What is a pica? (Tiny boxes that are used for measuring and spacing when creating a yearbook spread. One
box=one pica)
What is an eye line? (a line of blank space that links two side by side pages together)
Describe what a dominant photo is. (The largest photo on the page meant to draw your attention there first)
What is a folio? (the page numbers on a spread that include theme elements)
Describe and give an example of a sub-headline for the football page. (sub-head secondary information for
a headline, often expands, in sentence format, on the headline to give more information. Example: Headline:
MAKIN’ HISTORY/sub-headline: “football scores most touchdowns in Wizard history”
What should pictures on a page do? (tell a story, grab the attention of the reader)
What are the five major components of effective design? (content-driven, purpose, readability, consistency,
entertaining)
What is a caption? (explains the story the photo begins)
What is the purpose of a story/body copy on a page? (add information, details, and quotes)
Describe the layout concept of visual bull’s eye. (visual bull’s eye means verbal and visual elements interact
together to form a basic visual bull’s eye for design. Photos are in the center, words in the middle, and white
space on the outside of the bull’s eye)
Explain the concept of modular design. (modules are traditionally where photos would be. By including more
modules, you expand coverage, make photos smaller, and include more feature stories)
What does “3-peat” mean? (this strategy draws attention to common elements and unifies spreads/theme/etc.
To do this, you repeat one or two certain elements at least three times on the spread)
What is typography? (font styles, families, and faces)
What are three different styles of typography? (Serif, Sans Serif, Decorative)
Describe each type of typographic style. (serif: has feet on the edges of letters, sans serif: does not have feet,
decorative: fancy fonts such as cursive, block letters with design, etc)
