Looking at the history of “Fun” can almost be as good fun as having fun
itself! But just how much fun was to be had in Shropshire?
The course will look at the provision of popular entertainment in the 19th &
20th century – looking at the development of the circus, fairground, theatre
and cinema – in a general way, and then will focus in subsequent sessions
on how that worked out in the case of Shropshire.
We will look at:

The evolution of the funfair and circus and how this is illustrated by
examples in Shropshire.
 The history of theatrical entertainment - and how this is illustrated
by examples in Shropshire. The evolution of the Cinema and how
this is illustrated by examples in Shropshire.
The course is open to all – no specialist previous knowledge required.
This course will introduce the ancient Greeks and Romans, including
attitudes to war and peace, love and sex, religion and spirituality, by
considering key historical events and literary works (drama and poetry)
and exploring their influences on the modern world.

Who were the Greeks? Key events in Greek history

A brief introduction to Greek drama and poetry

Who were the Romans? Key events in Roman history

A brief introduction to Roman poetry

What are the main influences of the Graeco-Roman world? Why
do we still bother to study it in the 21st century?

CREATING CARDS
PAINTING SEASCAPES
Monday 10.30 - 1 and Tuesday 19 July 10 – 4.30

Ahead of your summer holiday this year why not learn the techniques to
paint the sea? This course will be a mixture of demonstration and
practical work led by an experienced, talented tutor. By the end of it you
will have a better idea of how to represent the ocean in your paintings.
We will look at:


How to capture swell, rolling waves and sun glinting on the ocean.
How to use watercolours to create a realistic or impressionistic
painting of the sea.
Some previous knowledge of painting would be useful but
absolute beginners are also welcome. Learners will need to bring
paints, brushes and paper but the tutor will have materials to
supplement those brought by learners
Monday 1.30 - 4 and Wednesday 20 July 10 – 4.30
Tutor Sue Blair
This course is aimed at adults who already have some basic Microsoft
Word skills and would like to use the computer to produce cards. The
course will involve using your own photographs or images from the
Internet.
The course will cover the following topics:





Using Microsoft Word
Choosing layouts
Inserting & downloading pictures
Inserting text
Using WordArt

SURVIVING WAR: THE BRITISH HOME FRONT AND THE
SECOND WORLD WAR
AN INTRODUCTION TO BIRD WATCHING

The myth and reality of Britain on the Home Front during the Second
World War continue to resonate. British society responded to the
challenges of TOTAL WAR, providing a survival narrative which is unique
in history. Text, images, film and broadcasting will be given special
attention.
We will cover:
 Rearmament and the coming of War
 The Phoney war and the crisis of May 1940
 Home defence and Operation Sea Lion
 The Blitz
 British wartime film and documentary
 Women at War
 Visioning War in Art and Literature
 The coming of the Welfare State: Beveridge
This course is open to all – no specialist previous knowledge required.
Tutor Peter Challinor
The course is designed to guide students towards a structured approach
to watching birds in their gardens and in the countryside, so that they can
advance their identification skills and so enhance their pleasure in
observing wild birds in their environment.
We will cover:





How birds are grouped together
Where to find local support and help in your birding
The fundamental elements of bird identification
Know something of bird habitats
Know where to go to enlist help and further guidance in this
interest
Although aimed primarily at beginners, the course will cater for those who
already are developing an interest in birds.

POETRY AND PAINTING

The aim of the course is to introduce students to the work of selected
women artists and to consider the obstacles which may have affected the
ability of women to compete in the western European art establishment.
This is an introduction to exploring the exciting synergy that is created
when you combine two art forms. It is a powerful combination that opens
new creative pathways. You will have the opportunity to explore a theme
through both a painting and by creating a linked poem.
The sessions are themed and there will be an opportunity at the end for
displaying and sharing your work. No previous experience necessary, just
a desire to explore your creativity. All materials provided.
We will cover:




Women – makers or subjects of art?
Portraiture, still life and landscape
History painting – the problem of the Nude
20th Century developments – leveling the playing field
