Update # 5 July-August 2005 The Upper Saranac Lake Foundation痴 2005 summer Milfoil Harvesting Program is on track for a very successful second dive season. The Dive team, with many returning from last year, has been much more efficient and extremely well managed. For instance, they removed 200 mats from Upper Saranac and reset them in Lower Fish Creek Pond in less time than it took to originally lay the mats in the Upper Lake last year. By starting early in the growth season with more divers, productivity has improved dramatically. Smaller plants and less regrowth have allowed the divers to cover more territory, faster. In addition, the tank divers, through training and experience, have been able to stay underwater longer, often using three tanks a day. On a three tank day, a diver can spend up to 8 hours underwater. 200 new mats were purchased and over 100 of them placed in the Upper Lake. Diving started on May 16th in Lower Fish Creek Pond, which was inspected last summer and found to be heavily infested, most likely being one of the primary sources of Milfoil in the Upper Lake. Milfoil has been in the Pond for over 15 years. Even though plants had grown to a height of three feet (much higher than in the Lake at the same date), with little boat traffic and the efficient laying of mats, the entire Pond was harvested in a two week period. We will revisit Lower Fish Creek Pond later this summer. The complete team of 20 divers and 10 support/top water workers started in the Upper Lake on June 1st. Their pattern was similar to last year痴, starting on the Western Shores, swimming from North to South. With few exceptions, Milfoil was found to be less dense than last year, and in combination with the experienced workers, allowed harvesting to progress more rapidly. By July 1st, the Divers had covered 43.6 miles of shoreline, 1356 acres and removed 392 bags off Milfoil. Last year痴 totals for the complete season were: 43.5 miles of shoreline, 1930 acres and 1809 bags of Milfoil. The first complete harvesting of the Lake is now completed, and we began the second cycle on July 5th. This will allow the diving teams swim the entire Lake twice and return to the most densely infested areas two to three times before diving ends on August 16. We will also be able to return to Lower Fish Creek Pond, with the entire group early one morning (first light), and harvest the entire pond in several hours, before boat traffic begins. The steel bridge channel and the channel to Upper Saranac will need to be closed temporarily, and extra safety measures put in place to protect the team. A weekly Fragment study is being done in the channel to Upper Saranac to capture and measure the flow of Milfoil fragments into the Upper Lake. To date, the results have been negative, but this is expected to change, as substantially increased boat traffic from the Camp Sites and mature Milfoil beds in the other ponds, will increase the potential for fragmentation. While we are greatly encouraged by the reduced regrowth of Milfoil, Paul Smith痴 College data collection from the 13 Transect Sites will be extremely important to the long term plans for containing Milfoil in the Lake and its environs. The Sites are being monitored monthly, measuring growth of Milfoil as well as other native species. The second report of this important Scientific Data is expected in late July. Early indications from the data collected to date are very encouraging. The science, so far, shows we are making progress in most areas. In addition, Paul Smith痴 has taken multiple core samples from around the Lake and is using them in the Lab to measure the growth rate of Milfoil seeds. Recently, the new Adirondack Natural History Museum in Tupper Lake did underwater filming of the divers harvesting Milfoil for a permanent exhibit at the Museum. The Adirondack Enterprise had a recent article on Invasive Species, which featured the Lake 痴 program. Harvesting Maps of the Lake can be viewed on the website, showing the location in density of the Milfoil found in this year痴 harvesting. A second Map will be available for comparison following the first complete harvesting of the Lake, as the second cycle takes place. Of special interest to the Foundation痴 unique Milfoil Program was a presentation by Curt Stiles to the entire APA Board of Commissioners in early June. The presentation was well received by the Board of Commissioners, with active participation and dialog. Curt requested, and was granted, a return visit in September, to present the results of Paul Smith痴 scientific study and this summer痴 data. Overall, the Foundation痴 Program appears to be very effective and exceeding expectations. Considering that there was no model to follow for a lake this size, and, that one had to be created and constantly updated, the present success is very gratifying and will set the standard for Milfoil containment within the Adirondack Park. The reception by the APA and the DEC is encouraging. It is hoped that a growing sense of cooperation and responsibility will lead to greater participation by the State of New York and its Agencies. We still need the financial support of all lake residents, shore owners, and those who use the lake regularly. Diving began on May 17th with the placing of 140, 15・x 20・ benthic mats in Big Square Bay, Bottle Bay and Saginaw Bay. A full compliment of 20 divers and 12 support people began hand harvesting milfoil on June 1st. Diving is planned to stop August 15th. Our plan is aggressive and allows for completion of the entire lake before milfoil starts to become brittle and fragment profusely. Because diving was started earlier than has been done in the past, either on Upper Saranac or elsewhere, we were able to harvest the same number of plants but their size and weight was much smaller. As a result, a smaller volume was harvested more rapidly and over a larger area than originally anticipated. As of July 2, 2004, over 700 bags, weighing approximately 8 tons have been collected from 34.4 miles of shore line and 1221 acres of lake. Upper Saranac comprises 5500 acres and has 44.3 mile of shoreline, including islands. However, the real task remains as we progress to the Eastern shoreline, particularly Buck Island, Saginaw Bay and Square Bay where large mature stands of milfoil exist. Please see the enclosed map for harvested locations. The very light pink outlining the shore is where the divers have swum for inspection. The darker pink to deep red is the areas where milfoil has been found and harvested and indicates the density of the milfoil removed. The only exception to this guideline is Fish Creek Ponds where we have not harvested but only preliminarily mapped milfoil locations. The yellow blocks are the current locations of the benthic mats. In addition, twelve sites have been selected for scientific study by The Adirondack Watershed Institute at Paul Smith痴 College. They have been surveyed and marked for future inspection, every 30 days, to measure the effectiveness of the harvesting program, to study regrowth rates and native plant growth over the next three years. We now have the ability to provide accurate, scientific data for not only our own use, but for the many other bodies of water that suffer from milfoil infestation. This map is updated weekly, on Mondays, and may be found on our website www.uslf.org and by clicking on 填SLF Today・ on the Home Page ・ Click to link to the Paul Smith痴 Site and the Progress Map. The 12 Transect sites can be accessed the same way by clicking on ・2 Transect Study Sites.・ The harvesting program began mainly on the western shoreline to complete as much as possible before the summer season, and boat traffic started. By working with the prevailing wind, any fragmentation caused by the diving moves to areas still to be harvested and minimizes reinfestation. Because diving started early, the milfoil had not matured in size, and harvesting was able actually get ahead of schedule, for a period. Now that the divers are moving into more heavily infested regions, and the milfoil has grown, progress will slow down. We will cover less distance and pull more bio mass in an equivalent period of time. For example, we harvested a volume in one week that had previously taken approximately one month to harvest. So while it appears that we have covered well more than one half of the shore line, our progress will now be slowed markedly, but still on schedule. The benthic mats have been moved for their second application, by flipping them parallel to their current locations, since these are the most heavily infested areas of the lake. Our lead diver, Tim Ladue, has been doing an incredible job of managing the program. In addition, the divers are extremely enthusiastic about the program. They all feel that we are tackling the problem correctly and effectively, and that we are dedicated to doing a complete program in an intelligent, well thought out way. They are impressed that even some of us 登ld timers・are very concerned about the environment. A big round of applause is due to Jim Crane and Tom Chipperfield for locating, purchasing, outfitting and finding mooring locations for all the boats and dive equipment. We would not have accomplished what we have without their unfailing dedication. Anticipated Schedules The actual dive program is work in progress. It is fluid, based upon weather, inspection of the level of infestation in various areas, logistics, boat traffic and many other variables. However, barring unforeseen difficulties, we will complete the plan outlined in our Case Statement and on our website on budget and on time. Additionally, we are getting a better handle on the amount of milfoil in Fish Creek and making an assessment of what is necessary there. This fall we will review all available data and decide what modifications are needed for years two and three. Data from the 12 transect sites will be invaluable in making that assessment. Fundraising The other half of the project. We have been extremely fortunate in the response that we have received from the Lake community. Against a goal of $1.5 million needed to fund the three year program, we have raised $1.1 in cash and pledges as of June 30th. While the response was immediate and generous we are not yet at the level of participation we need to show broad support. To date, we have contributions from 125 families. There are approximately 600 camps on the lake, so we have a ways to go to reach our overall goal and dramatically increase our participation rate. To make this entire effort work, we need not only to attack the problems on the Lake itself, but more importantly, to focus on the upstream water bodies that have been identified as the source of milfoil. These areas belong predominately to the State of New York. While the State finally recognized milfoil as an 妬nvasive specie・and formed a committee to address the problem, the first meeting of this committee is not until November 2005 and no funding has been appropriated for them. While we have been offered assistance by Lake residents to give us access to Albany, including the Governor痴 Office, for future funding assistance in addressing the State痴 responsibility in fighting milfoil, we do not have the enough support of those of us affected by milfoil. We need to have at least a 95% response rate to prove our commitment to fight milfoil. We need everybody痴 participation, no matter how little. See the website for the first contributor and ask yourself 努hat can I do?・ We have suggested a guideline of $1000 a year for a three year commitment and many have responded to that challenge. Rebuilding the Bartlett Carry Dam was highly successful in its fundraising using a similar metric. With your help we can accomplish the same thing, but what we need is for everybody to do what they can to protect, not only our lake, but to develop a program that will help others around the country with similar dilemmas. We cannot do it without you. We cannot impact the State, and even Federal Agencies, if we do not show local commitment. It痴 up to you. Do you want to preserve your property value, want your children and grandchildren to be able to experience the Adirondacks as you have? We need to have everyone who uses the lake participate in endowing the long term future of Upper Saranac Lake. (Curt Stiles 359-7053 HYPERLINK "mailto:csstiles@adelphia.net" csstiles@adelphia.net ) 2004 RECAP The initial year of the Upper Saranac Lake Foundation痴 three year program to control Eurasian Milfoil was an unqualified success and a tribute to all those who made it possible. Curt Stiles, who oversaw the entire process, spent countless hours researching and preparing the program and budget, with no model to follow. To the best of our knowledge, no other Lake in the Country has attacked Milfoil infestation with such an extensive, detailed project. Jim Crane and Tom Chipperfield purchased all the necessary boats and equipment, found mooring locations and prepared the fleet for launching in mid-May. Tim LaDue, Crew Chief, worked tireless hours with Curt, Jim and Tom in preparing the summer痴 dive schedule, as well as overseeing 20 divers and 10 support people. In addition, he kept all the equipment repaired and functioning, so that no time was lost due to equipment failure. In the process, he suggested redesigns for the Hookah Rigs that the Manufacturer has incorporated into the replacement units they have sent for this year. The Dive Team was very enthusiastic about the entire program, completely dedicated as they worked long hours, through a cold and wet summer. Of the crew of 27 that were active at the end of last summer, 18 are returning in 2005. Paul Smith痴 College provided greatly appreciated administrative assistance, handling recruiting, payroll and all the necessary personnel paper work, as well as data management for the project. Dan Kelting, Director of the Adirondack Watershed Institute, added his expertise through the collection and reporting of all the Scientific Data and GPS mapping. For the first time, solid baseline data has been collected for the entire Lake, which will become more meaningful in years two and three. To measure how successful the 2004 summer was, consider that 45.3 miles of shoreline were hand harvested, 1930 acres were covered and 1809 bags of milfoil, weighing 18 tons wet, were removed between May 17 and August 13th. A small crew, beginning May 17th, covered the most heavily infested areas of Lake bottom with 3500 square feet of Benthic mats. In addition, a combination of advantageous equipment purchasing and outstanding management by Tim LaDue, allowed the program to end $45,000 under budget, excluding the Contingency Fund, and two weeks early. The extra time was used to return to the most heavily infested sectors of the Lake, which had been harvested earlier in the summer. Interestingly, this second round of harvesting provided additional Scientific Data, as regrowth was found to be limited to single shoots from roots missed initially and from seed germination, due to newly available sunlight, after the initial mass of Milfoil had been removed. 2005 PLAN OF ATTACK Because of the high degree of 2004 success and accuracy of the budget, the program for 2005 will be very similar to last year痴, both in scope and cost, with some additions and adjustments. The final dive plan will be made when all the data collected by Paul Smith痴 last year, and from early spring observations are completed and compiled. Last fall, Tim LaDue resurveyed mat locations and inspected the critical, heavily infested sectors. In the process he found a new bed in the Southern end, which had probably grown from fragmentation. He did additional assessments, through the ice, late in March this year. This summer, with the savings from the 2004 program, Lower Fish Creek Pond, up to the State Bridge, a very heavily infested area, will be added to the program. Last fall, Tim made GPS maps and staked the Milfoil beds, which could be one of the sources of the Lake痴 problems. To reduce the amount of fragmentation that flows from this area into the Upper Lake, the mat laying and harvesting will begin mid-May. Key Components of the 2005 Plan: 1. Removal and repositioning of all Bethnic mats in Upper Saranac Lake.. 2. Repositioning and the addition of mats in key locations, when dense areas are discovered during regular summer harvesting. 3. Early positioning of additional mats in Lower Fish Creek Pond. 4. The entire lake will be inspected again, to insure all new growth is found and removed. Beginning in early June, coverage will be from West to East, with high traffic areas harvested first, the same as last year. 5. Increased Scientific Study and measurement by the Adirondack Watershed Institute. Phase I of the plan will Over 4000 linear feet of Pond, using two to three third team consisting of start May 16th in both the Lake and Lower Fish Creek Pond. Benthic mats, both new and from the Lake, will be set in the man dive teams with tanks. During the week of May 23rd, a four divers, with a boat and Hookah Rig, will begin hand harvesting areas of Milfoil not covered by mats. Starting on the Fish Creek side of the channel, they will follow a clockwise pattern around the Pond. At the same time, high traffic areas in Upper Saranac will be matted or hand harvested, to reduce the potential for fragmentation later in the season, and before boat traffic makes diving unsafe. Phase II will start June 6th in the Lake, with a full compliment of dive teams and support personnel. There will be four Hookah dive boats with four divers each, and two boats with two divers each, using tanks. The plan is to follow last year痴 pattern, from West to East to reduce prevailing wind-driven fragmentation. The divers will swim the entire shoreline, including islands. As they find dense areas of Milfoil, new mats will be set. Based on last year痴 successful early completion, and anticipating less regrowth this year, the divers should be able to return to the heavily infested areas two to three times during the summer. Scientific Studies The combination of extensive GPS mapping, data collected by Paul Smith痴 College, both last year and this spring, will provide an accurate assessment of the success of 2004痴 Milfoil removal program and a baseline for future years. For the first time, possibly anywhere, there will be a scientific measurement of the effectiveness of matting and hand harvesting Milfoil in a large lake. As a result, it will be possible to make an accurate assessment and projection for 2006, and more importantly, the scope of the long term task and the cost of annual maintenance, beginning in 2007. More extensive data will be collected this year through the addition of three new areas of Scientific Study. 1. Two new Transect sites will be added in locations where mats have been removed, to establish baseline data on the effectiveness of Benthic mats. 2. A seed growth study will actually grow seeds in a lab, to provide data on various bottom sediments, identifying those that nurture denser growth. 3. Expansion of the Fish Creek fragment study, which began last year. Measurements of fragment flow out of Fish Creek Ponds into the Lake will be taken in June, July, August and September. Inspection and scientific monitoring, from May through the fall, will be performed by The Adirondack Watershed Institute at Paul Smith痴, which functions as an independent 疎rms length・entity to provide objective, accurate, fact based research on the Milfoil Project. Since we expect to find substantially less Milfoil infestation than we did in 2004, the savings are being reinvested in addressing the upstream sources of Milfoil. The first phase will be the removal of Milfoil in Lower Fish Creek Pond this summer. For dive time, mats and supervision, we expect this part of the project to cost upwards of $50,000 for the first year. Additionally we now need to begin to build our base for funding beyond 2006. We have estimated this cost to be in the $100,000 range annually beginning in 2007. Post Office Box 564 Saranac Lake, New York 12983 FORWARDING AND RETURN POSTAGE GUARANTEED ADDRESS CORRECTION REQUESTED The Upper Saranac Lake Foundation痴 2005 summer Milfoil Harvesting Program is developing into an extraordinary success. The Dive team, with many returning from last year, has been much more efficient and extremely well managed. For instance, they removed 200 mats from Upper Saranac and reset them in Fish Creek Pond in less time than it took to originally lay the in the Upper Lake last year. By starting early in the growth season with more divers, the productivity has improved dramatically. Smaller plants and less regrowth have allowed the divers to cover more territory. In addition, the tank divers have been able to stay down longer, 7-8 hours per day, using three tanks a day compared to the norm of 6 hours and two tanks daily. 200 new mats were purchased and 100 more mats have been laid in the Upper Lake. Diving started on May 16th in Lower Fish Creek Pond, which was inspected last summer and found to heavily infested, most likely being one of the primary sources of Mifoil in the Upper Lake. Milfoil may have been in the Pond for 15 years. Even though plants had grown to a height of three feet (much higher than in the Lake at the same date), with little boat traffic and the efficient laying of mats, the entire Pond was harvested in a two week period. The complete team of 20 divers and 10 support/top water workers started in the Upper Lake on June 1st. Their pattern was similar to last year痴, starting on the Western Shores, swimming from North to South. With few exceptions, Milfoil was found to be less dense that last year, and in combination with the experienced workers, allowed harvesting to progress more rapidly. By July 1st, the Divers had covered 43.6 miles of shoreline, 1356 acres and removed 392 bags off Milfoil. Last year痴 totals for the complete season were: 43.5 miles of shoreline, 1930 acres and 1809 bags of Milfoil (equaling 18 tons). It is anticipated that the first complete harvesting of the Lake will finish by xxxx. This will allow the diving teams to return to the most densely infested areas two to three times before diving ends on August 16. It is hoped to be able to return to Fish Creek Pond, with the entire group at first light, to harvest the entire pond in just a few hours, before boat traffic begins. The steel bridge channel will need to be closed and extra safety measures put in place to protect the team. A weekly (periodic?) study is being done at the Fish Creek steel bridge to capture and measure the flow of Milfoil fragments into the Upper Lake. To date, the results have been negative, but this is expected to change, as substantially increased boat traffic from the Camp Sites and mature Milfoil growth, will increase the potential for fragmentation. While we are greatly encouraged by the reduced regrowth of Milfoil, Paul Smith痴 College data collection from the 12 (14??) Transect Sites will be extremely important to the long term plans for containing Milfoil in the Lake and its environs. The Sites are being monitored weekly, measuring growth of Milfoil as well as other native species. The first report of this important, and unique, Scientific Data is expected in mid-July. Early indications from the incomplete data collected to data are very encouraging. The science, so far, shows・ In addition, Paul Smith痴 has taken multiple core samples from around the Lake and is using them in the Lab to measure the growth rate of Milfoil seeds. Recently, the new Adirondack Natural History Museum in Tupper Lake did underwater filming of the divers harvesting Milfoil for a permanent exhibit at the Museum. The Enterprise had a recent article on Invasive Species which features the Lake痴 program. It can be reviewed on the Foundation痴 website: USLF.ORG. In addition, Harvesting Maps of the Lake can be viewed on the website, showing the location in density of the Milfoil found in this year痴 harvesting. A second Map will be available for comparison following the first complete harvesting of the Lake, as the second and third swims take place. Of special interest to the Foundation痴 nationally unique Milfoil Program was a presentation by Curt Stiles・to the entire APA Board of Commissioners in early June. A resident of another Lake, who attends all Board meetings, commented to Curt that this was the most attention accorded any previous, similar presentation to the Board. Curt requested, and was granted, a return visit in September, to present the results of Paul Smith痴 scientific study and this summer痴 data. Overall, the Foundation痴 Program seems to be extremely effective and exceeding expectations. Considering that there was no model to follow, that one had to be created independently by Curt Stiles and his team, the present success is very gratifying and will set a standard for the rest of the country. The reception by the APA and the DEC is encouraging. It is hoped that a growing sense of cooperation and responsibility will lead to greater participation by the State of New York and its Agencies.
