The Creature from the Deep The coach door swung open and The Ambitious Six stepped out, followed by Professor Hearth. They came from the science department at a university that no one ever actually seemed to remember the name of, despite the fact that it was widely known for its amazing discoveries! The group consisted of six students. Linda, an A-level in biology. Candace, the new astronomer at the school. Roxanne, who had already studied geology, marine biology, botany and zoology and had moved on to her other fascination of forensics. Robert, who studied physics. Ernie who, like Candace, studied astronomy. And Alan who was the only student there who studied chemistry. They and one of the university’s top professors, Professor Hearth, had just arrived at the world’s largest science convention. Inside was amazing! Millions of activities and experiments and lectures covered the enormous area of the floor. Also, the walls were laden with habitats containing natural oddities and tanks of fascinating water life. Hanging from the ceiling was a model of the solar system on a massive scale. To a science student, this was heaven! All the students but Roxanne dashed off. Meanwhile Professor Hearth walked along to where he would be giving a lecture on advanced physics. Roxanne walked over to a grand window and looked out – something was wrong with the water. It looked disturbed and inky blue as though someone or something had been tampering with it. “Roxanne!” She turned around to see Candace “Oh, hello Candace,” she said as calmly as she could, however Candace seemed to sense something was wrong. After all, she had been Roxanne’s best friend for seven years now. “What’s wrong?” she asked “The water,” said Roxanne plainly “It’s moving,” At that moment a colossal tentacle towered out of the water. Maybe it was Candace’s scream that brought the other four students rushing to the scene or maybe they could sense something was wrong too. Whatever it was they were there within thirty seconds or less. “WHAT IS THAT?” screamed Ernie when he arrived “You know, I thought it was only a myth,” Roxanne began to say Linda interrupted with “Are you sure it isn’t a giant squid?” “Yes, it’s to big to even be a colossal squid, that thing is the very stuff of legends!” “What is it then?” begged Robert “Are absolutely you sure it’s not a colossal squid?” asked Alan, rather annoyingly “Yes I am sure, I did study marine biology!” Answered Roxanne sharply, then she said “That, that thing is a… A Kraken!” Their eyes suddenly fell on to two students from a rival university standing at the other end of the window (which was about five meters wide) they were made of stone, or so it seemed. Ronan and Cam stood stock still by a huge window. They watched as yet another tentacle flashed out of the water. Whatever this creature was it seemed to be a furious fracas flying through the freezing water. They however were not frozen to the spot by fear or some sort of mind transferred paralysis but by joy. Well, as much joy as they were capable of feeling. They noticed that the six other students who had been standing nearby had returned with a middle aged man. All of a sudden… “Oh My Gosh it’s going to crush the convention!” Yelled Linda She was right; the Kraken had brought its gigantic tentacle down on the venue. Squelch! It brought one massive sucker down on the roof. People swarmed out of the building. The six and Professor Hearth boarded a life boat just as the building collapsed. They gave a great heave and the boat leapt into the water. Off they sped. The kraken followed them, floating like a dark cloud in the inky water. Cam and Ronan opened their dark, gloomy eyes and found that they were drifting on a piece of debris. How they had survived the collapse was a mystery. This was no time to dwell on possibilities though; the Kraken was hurtling through the water and straight towards them. Then, all of a sudden, they were pulled to safety. A harpoon soared through the air and the Kraken shrank back into the depths of the water. The rest was all a blur. Would this be the last they saw of the Kraken – or anything else for that matter? They got back to dry land, Heaven knows how, but they all made it back safely. They pondered on whether or not people should know about the previous events. They decided that even if the Kraken was gone for good, even if other survivors told the tale, they shouldn’t speak of it to anyone to avoid another catastrophe. The six looked at Cam and Ronan. They were no longer enemies. After all, they had just been through a real life legend together.
