MOTIVATIONAL INTERVI EWING… WHAT IS IT?
Motivational interviewing (MI) refers to an approach in part developed by clinical psychologists Professor William R.
Miller, Ph.D. and Professor Stephen Rollnick, Ph.D. It is a client-centered, semi-directive method of engaging intrinsic
motivation to change behaviour by developing discrepancy and exploring and resolving ambivalence within the client.
Motivational interviewing is non-judgmental, non-confrontational and non-adversarial. The approach attempts to
increase the client's awareness of the potential problems caused, consequences experienced, and risks faced as a result
of the behavior in question. Alternately, career practitioners help clients envision a better future, and become
increasingly motivated to achieve it. The strategy seeks to help clients think differently about their behavior and
ultimately to consider what might be gained through change.
THE TRAINING
The 3-day intensive workshop will provide participants with exposure and introduction to the theory, style, principles,
and skill-sets of motivational interviewing. This training is very interactive and experiential, and offers a variety of
learning activities – video clips, live demonstrations, “real plays,” small group sessions, and opportunities for hands-on
skill practice and feedback. Additionally, we will discuss and experience how a motivational approach can have a
powerful, three-fold impact:
1. working more effectively with clients who have been labeled “difficult,” “resistant,” or “stuck,”
2. lessening the impact of counselor burnout, and
3. working more effectively with clients who have a myriad of overlapping change-related issues.
Participants will:
 Be introduced to Stages of Change
 Examine what motivates people to change
 Assess a person’s apparent readiness to change
 Understand the importance of the Spirit of Motivational Interviewing
 Be able to use the micro skills of MI: OARS (open ended questions, affirmations, reflections and summaries)
 Recognize and reinforce change talk
 Understand the concept of eliciting and strengthening change talk
 Understand the importance of rolling with resistance
 Be introduced to an MI change plan
THE FACILITATOR – ROXANNE SAWATZKY
Roxanne Sawatzky is the founder of Empowering Change and was the Champion and Project Manager for the
application of Stages of Change (SOC) and Motivational Interviewing in the employment sector at Opportunities for
Employment in Winnipeg from 2006-2010. Over the three years of study, Roxanne trained project staff on the model,
designed processes, procedures and curriculum that were used in the successfully researched Stages of Change and
Motivational Interviewing project with individuals who were in various stages of work readiness. Roxanne, as an
independent Consultant, now offers this training to agencies across the country.
While there are many good Motivational Interviewing trainers, membership in the Motivational Interviewing Network of
Trainers (MINT) is the only status accorded to training professionals. It is acknowledged by the MINT organization and
can only be granted through direct train-the-trainer work with the model originators Dr. William R. Miller & Dr. Steve
Rollnick. Roxanne went to Spain in June 2009 and as a result of the training she is now a member of the Motivational
Interviewing Network of Trainers. Roxanne’s passion is working with marginalized individuals. She started her career at
the age of 12 when she decided her brother needed to be “fixed”. She has since learnt that she can’t “fix” anyone but
she can definitely help people get “unstuck”!
