Aperture
Aperture is ‘the size of the opening in the lens when a picture is taken.’

Moving from one f-stop to the next doubles or halves the size of the amount of opening in your lens
(and the amount of light getting through)
Each time you descend from one aperture opening to the next, or stop down, such as from f/4 to f/5.6,
the amount of light passing through the lens is cut in half.
Likewise, if you change from an aperture opening of f/11 to f/8, the volume of light entering the lens
doubles.
Each halving or doubling of light is referred to as a full stop. This is important to note since many
cameras today offer not only full stops, but also the ability to set the aperture to one-third stops, i.e. f/4,
f/4.5, f/5, f/5.6, f/6.3, f/7.1, f/8, f/9, f/10, f/11, and so on.
Tip to remember:
1 flower in focus, use a smaller number f/1.2 Shallow Depth of field
16 flowers in focus use larger number f/16 Large Depth of field
Examples:
Left : Small Aperture f/16 Right: Large Aperture f/5.6
Left Photo: Less flowers in focus Larger Aperture Smaller number: f/5.6
Right Photo: More flowers in focus Smaller Aperture Larger number f/22

Lab# 5: Working with Aperture
Choose 5 – 7 items, line them up in series one after each other.
Think about different shooting angles/subjects (try keep the sun behind you, find shade, change your
angle), make sure your background complements the subject (simple and monochromatic)
TASK 1: Take 5 photos of your object with the exact same composition but with 5 different apertures
settings from large to small: Large aperture (F1.4-5.6), Small Aperture (F8 -22) and flash
TASK 2: Take 3 creative
Include a small description with each photo to what aperture you used and the effect
Post on Flickr in a set called Lab: Aperture
Evaluation: 25 Marks
