How to Use this Document This document is designed to help you set up your dissertation so it meets Office of Graduate Studies (OGS) and College of Education (COE) standards. It contains all the front matter required by OGS for your thesis. It also contains styles that are consistent with APA formatting, which is required by COE. To Set Up the Front Matter Look for the text within angled brackets, like this: <this is text within angled brackets>. Delete the text and the brackets and type your information. Please be careful to delete ONLY the text and the brackets! If you do not need an optional section (Dedication, Acknowledgement, List of Tables, List of Figures) you can delete those pages. APA Styles and the Tables of Contents, Tables, Figures This document contains styles that meet APA standards and that will help you easily create your Tables of Contents, Tables and Figures. The styles named “Heading 1,” “Heading 2,” “Heading 3,” and “Heading 4” will create headings consistent with APA 6th edition formatting. To use them, either select the style you want and start typing, or select (highlight) existing text and apply the style. Headings 8 and 9 are designed to help you create your Table of Figures and Table of Tables. To use them: 1. Type “Figure ” or “Table ” and the number of the figure or table. 2. Hold the <Ctrl> key and press the <Enter> key. 3. Type the title of the Figure or Table. 4. Press <Enter>. 5. Select (highlight) the two lines you just typed. 6. Choose either the Heading 8 (for figures) or Heading 9 (for tables) style. Generating the Tables To generate a table: 1. Click on the table. 2. Press the <F9> key. Once you are comfortable using this document, you should delete these instructional pages.
