DIVISION 31 - SITE WORK SECTION 31 20 00 - EARTHWORK PAGE 1 OF 3 _________________________________________________________________ PART 1 - GENERAL 1.1 Work of this section includes .1 Provide excavation and backfill at locations indicated on the drawings. .2 Provide preparation of subgrade for support of paving work 1.2 Quality Assurance .1 Definition - "Excavation" consists of removal of material encountered to subgrade elevations indicated, including paving and subsoil striping and the subsequent disposal of materials removed. .2 Codes and Standards: Perform excavation work in compliance with applicable requirements of authorities having jurisdiction. 1.3 Job Conditions .1 Locate existing underground utilities in areas of work. If utilities are to remain in place, provide adequate means of support and protection during earthwork operations. Should uncharted or incorrectly charted utilities be encountered during excavation, consult utility companies immediately for directions. Cooperate with Owner and utility companies in keeping respective services and facilities in operation. .2 Protection of Persons and Property - Barricade open excavations occurring as part of this work and post with warning lights. .3 Protect structures, utilities, sidewalks, pavements and other facilities from damage caused by settlement, lateral movement, undermining, washout and other hazards created by earthwork operations. .4 The use of explosives is not permitted. PART 2 - PRODUCTS 2.1 Soil Materials .1 R- /10-11 Subbase Material - Naturally or artificially graded mixture of natural or crushed gravel, crushed stone, crushed slag, natural or crushed sand. DIVISION 31 - SITE WORK SECTION 31 20 00 - EARTHWORK PAGE 2 OF 3 _________________________________________________________________ Comply with NYSDOT Standard Specification Item 304.02 or 304.04. Submit mixture for approval prior to commencement of work. .2 Backfill Material - Satisfactory soil materials free of clay, rock or gravel larger than 2" in any dimension, debris, waste, frozen materials, vegetable and other deleterious matter. Submit mixture for approval prior to commencement of work. PART 3 - EXECUTION 3.1 Excavation .1 Authorized excavation includes excavations of pavements, earth and other obstructions visible on ground surface; items indicated to be demolished and removed; together with earth and other materials encountered that are not classified as unauthorized excavation. .2 Unauthorized excavation consists of removal of materials beyond indicated subgrade elevations. Unauthorized excavation as well as remedial work directed by Project Architect, shall be at Contractor's expense. .3 Provide a stake out of all utilities prior to start of work. Protect and maintain utilities against damage. Immediately report damage to the Project Architect and make prompt repair of any damage or disturbance. .4 Excavate trench to proper depth and grade no wider than required for placement of work. .5 When excavation has reached required subgrade elevations, notify Project Inspector. .6 Shoring and Bracing - Provide materials for shoring and bracing as required to adequately support walls of excavation. .7 Do not allow water to accumulate in excavations. Remove water to prevent softening of footing bottoms and other soil changes detrimental to stability of subgrades and foundations. Provide and maintain pumps and discharge lines necessary to convey water away from excavations to existing catch basins. Do not discharge dirt or debris into drainage system. R- /10-11 DIVISION 31 - SITE WORK SECTION 31 20 00 - EARTHWORK PAGE 3 OF 3 _________________________________________________________________ .8 3.2 Material Storage - Stockpile satisfactory excavated materials where directed by Owner, until required for backfill or fill. Dispose of excess soil material and waste material as herein specified. Compaction .1 General - Control soil compaction during construction providing minimum percentage of density specified for each area classification indicated below. .1 .2 3.3 Moisture Control - Where subgrade or layer of soil material must be moisture conditioned before compaction, uniformly apply water to surface to prevent free water appearing on surface during or subsequent to compaction operations. Backfill .1 .2 3.5 Compact top 12" of subgrade and each 12" layer of backfill or fill material at 95 percent maximum dry or relative dry density. Backfill excavations in 12" layers as promptly as work permits, but not until completion of the following: .1 Acceptance of construction below finish grade. .2 Removal of trash and debris from locations to be backfilled. When a compacted subbase is shown to be 6" or less, place material in a single layer. When shown to be more than 6" thick, place material in equal layers, except no single layer more than 6" or less than 3" in thickness when compacted. Disposal .1 Removal From Owner's Property - Remove waste materials, including acceptable excavated material, trash and debris and dispose of it off Owner's property. END OF SECTION R- /10-11
