Introduction to Review of Basic English
Catalog Description:
149I - Introduction to Review of Basic English
3 units
A comprehensive review of the structure of the simple English sentence; short writing assignments;
reading fiction and nonfiction; reinforces fluency in reading and writing. 6 hours.

Prerequisite Skills:
None.
Expected Outcomes for Students:
1. use simple present and present continuous verb tenses
2. form affirmative statements, negative statements and questions using appropriate auxiliary
verbs in simple present and present progressive tenses
3. demonstrate understanding of the unique role of the verb be
4. use common terms in metalanguage that describes English grammar
5. demonstrate understanding of the structure of an English sentence, including syntactic
conventions of simple sentences and questions;
6. use adverbs of frequency in the correct location in a sentence
7. identify the main idea and supporting examples in a reading
8. organize a paragraph with a topic sentence followed by supporting ideas
9. demonstrate the process and purpose of multiple draft writing
10.proofread a text for errors
Course Content:
1. Simple Present and Present Continuous verb tenses
2. formation of affirmative, negative and interrogative statements in Simple Present and
Present Progressive tenses
3. the unique role of the verb be
4. metalanguage that describes English grammar (noun, verb, adjective, adverb)
5. structure of an English sentence, including syntactic conventions of simple sentences
and questions
6. location of adverbs of frequency in a sentence
7. Read selections from nonfiction, textbooks or novels related to students’ occupations for
the main idea
8. paragraph organization (topic sentence & supporting ideas)
9. write multiple drafts of paragraphs
10. Edit writing which contains common errors
11. Vocabulary from readings related to their field of work

Typical Assignments and Methods of Evaluating Student Progress:
1. Typical Assignments
a. Write one paragraph on a topic with the main idea in the first line and supporting details
following it. Revise the paragraph to make the organization clear and to eliminate irrelevant
sentences that don’t lend support. Proofread it to correct grammar and punctuation. Hand in
all three drafts to the teacher in the same green exam booklet.
b. Read a one-page selection from a textbook for native English speakers. Identify the
author’s main idea and ideas or examples that support it.
