DEVELOPING NATIONAL OCCUPATIONAL STANDARDS (NOS) FOR TACKLING DOMESTIC AND SEXUAL ABUSE/VIOLENCE Sector Consultation – We need your feedback Who are Skills for Justice? We are the dedicated Sector Skills Council and Standards Setting Body for the Justice sector. Working with Justice Sector organisations across England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales, we identify the skills priorities and actions required for workforce development. Project Background Tackling domestic violence and sexual abuse is a priority for Government. In 2005 the Home Office commenced work to map all the functions carried out by those working in the area of domestic violence and sexual abuse. This work identified the skills and expertise of staff as well as identifying their training needs. As such, we have secured funding to build on this initial work. The project commenced in February 2008 with the aims of mapping the occupations within the sexual abuse and domestic violence area of work identifying skills needs and looking to see if existing national occupations standards can address these developing new national occupational standards What are National Occupational Standards (NOS)? National Occupational Standards (NOS) describe competent performance in terms of outcomes. They allow a clear assessment of competence against nationally agreed standards of performance, across a range of workplace circumstances for all roles. Today, NOS are viewed as an indispensable tool for managing a highly skilled workforce. They are used widely to support individual and organisational development and quality assurance at all levels. They provide benchmarks of good practice across the UK. Progress to date A number of working groups have been held across the four UK countries consisting of representatives from organisations tackling sexual and domestic abuse. Utilising the knowledge and expertise of these representatives, draft National Occupational Standards have been developed for the functions carried out by those working within the tackling domestic and sexual abuse sector. Getting involved The draft NOS are available for UK wide consultation now. We are inviting feedback and comments from those within the workforce and from those working in partnership with organisations tackling domestic and sexual abuse/violence.
