An introduction to the Appointment
The Department of Paediatric Dentistry is seeking a full-time Specialist Registrar to join a
dynamic, enthusiastic and forward thinking team. The department has a long established
specialist service in Paediatric Dentistry. This is an excellent opportunity to join a first class
team in an active and progressive central London teaching hospital environment.

Clinical Directorate & Department Information
The post sits with Department of Paediatric Dentistry. Out-patient services are based in the
Dental Centre at St Thomas’ Hospital and the day-case GA services in the Day-case Unit
(DCU), at Guy’s Hospital. The post holder will work in the Cleft Unit primarily and the Dental
Centre at St. Thomas Hospital. GA lists will be carried out at the Evelina Children’s Hospital
for admitted patients and the DCU at Guy’s Hospital for non-admitted patients.
The Department of Paediatric Dentistry:
Guy’s & St Thomas’ Hospital Foundation Trust is the largest in the NHS. The Children’s
Dentistry Department for out-patients is located in the newly-refurbished Dental Centre on
the Ground Floor, South Wing, at St Thomas’ Hospital. The Department has a state of the art
environment which is child-friendly. The main aims of the Department are the provision of an
excellent specialist service in children’s dentistry, the education and clinical training of junior
hospital dentists and postgraduate dentists, and the pursuit of research and scholarship. A
specialist service is provided for children and adolescents with complex medical problems,
those with learning difficulty or physical disability, those with inherited anomalies of the
dentition, and those with complex dentoalveolar injuries. The Department of Children’s
Dentistry at St Thomas’ Hospital is one of only 3 teaching hospitals in London which provides
a walk-in A&E service for children and adolescents in acute pain or those requiring
emergency management of dentoalveolar trauma.
The Department provides care for very young children with early childhood caries. There is
an extensive day case general anaesthetic (GA) service for children requiring oral
rehabilitation and minor oral surgical procedures. The Day Case Unit is situated on F23,
Tower Wing, at Guy’s Hospital. Children and adolescents with complex medical needs who
require dental GA are seen at the Evelina Children’s Hospital.
The out-patient Department for Children’s Dentistry at the Dental Centre, in St Thomas’
Hospital comprises of 13 dental chairs. Three of the surgeries are equipped with intra oral Xray machines and one surgery has a dental microscope. There is also a dedicated X-ray
room on the Ground Floor with intra and extra oral X-ray machines. There is piped inhalation
sedation in six dental surgeries.
Staff in the Department of Children’s Dentistry work very closely with orthodontic colleagues
and this is made possible by the co-location of Orthodontic services for children and
adolescents in the Dental Centre (Lower Level).
Current Services
The Department of Paediatric Dentistry at Guy’s & St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust has
developed, over many years, a comprehensive range of in-patient, daycase and out-patient
services for children of all ages (with an upper limit of 16 years). The staff provide specialist
services to the local communities in Lambeth, Southwark and Lewisham. We also provide
specialist services for patients from across London, the South East and further afield.
The range of specialty services provided by the department include:






Preventive advice and therapy
Paediatric restorative dentistry and minor oral surgery
Management of children with dental pain and anxiety
Management of children requiring inhalation sedation
Care of medically compromised children
Care of children with disability/learning difficulty

 Management of children with oro-dental injury
 Management of children with complex dental anomalies/inherited disorders of the oral
cavity and dentition
 Management of paediatric oral pathology
This range of patients seen has allowed the Department to support the clinical training and
education of postgraduates and junior staff as part of general professional training and
specialisation as well as other postgraduate dentists. There is a full consultation service and
specialist treatment for appropriate patients.
Source of patient referrals
The department receives Paediatric Dental referrals from general dental practitioners;
community dental officers; general medical practitioners; dental specialists, including those in
restorative dentistry and orthodontics; and a variety of paediatric medical specialties at the
Evelina Children’s Hospital and other hospitals. In addition patients are seen on a selfreferral basis attending the department’s A&E service, with dental pain, acute oral infection,
or having suffered oro-dental injury.
Specialist services provided within the Department
Specialist services in paediatric dentistry are provided to out-patients at St Thomas’ under
local anaesthesia and inhalation sedation as appropriate.
The day-case general anaesthetic facility is situated on Floor 23, Tower Wing, where the
paediatric dental team provide 7.5 day-case operating sessions per week for oral
rehabilitation and minor oral surgery under general anaesthesia (GA), and 2 day-case
operating sessions for exodontia. There is also a 1.5 weekly consultant delivered in-patient
GA session for children with complex medical disabilities at the Evelina Children’s Hospital
(ECH).
A multidisciplinary clinic is held weekly with our orthodontic and restorative colleagues in
order to ensure appropriate intermediate and long-term treatment planning for children with
hypodontia. Other interdisciplinary clinics are held with Oral Medicine and Children’s
Dentistry, and Orthodontics and Children’s Dentistry. The development of an IV sedation
service in the Department is currently underway. An interdisciplinary anomalies clinic with
Restorative Dentistry is also being planned.
One of our part-time consultants in Paediatric Dentistry is a member of the multidisciplinary
team supporting children with cleft lip and palate and works in close association with the
Plastic Surgeons, Orthodontists, Restorative Dentists, Oral Surgeons, Speech Therapists,
etc.
The Department has become a major referral centre for children who sustain dentoalveolar
injuries. These patients have complex paediatric dental needs and many require
interdisciplinary care in the long-term.
Facilities in the Department
The department has appropriate secretarial support, full library facilities in New Hunt’s House
at the Guy’s campus and there are also excellent research facilities.
The Department has 2 whole-time secretaries, technical laboratory support and an
Administrative manager on site.
The post-holder would share office space with another consultant and has a Trust computer
also.

Training Opportunities
1) Consultation Clinics:
A wide range of patients are referred to the department of Paediatric Dentistry at GSTT,
including those with complex medical disabilities, behavioural management problems,
dentoalveolar trauma, and those with dental anomalies. The trainee would be expected to
participate in the assessment of and treatment planning for new patients attending consultant
clinics. There would also be an opportunity to see review patients on these clinics.
2) GSTT has the equivalent of 9 GA sessions per week for oral rehabilitation and 1.5
sessions for exodontia sessions per week.
3) The trainee would be expected to participate in multidisciplinary clinics such as
Hypodontia Clinics, Orthodontics & Paediatric Dentistry, Oral Medicine & Paediatric
Dentistry, and Cleft Lip and Palate.
4) GSTT is a major referral centre for dentoalveolar injuries. The trainee would be expected
to participate in Trauma Clinics. These clinics provide valuable experience in assessing
patients with dentoalveolar injuries. The trainee would also see the long-term outcomes of
cases with complex dentoalveolar injuries.
5) GSTT is major referral centre for paediatric Cardiology, Renal, Haematology and
Neurology patients. The Dental Centre is co-located with the Evelina Children’s Hospital and
South Thames Cleft Service.
6) The trainee would gain experience in the dental management of walk-in emergencies to
the A&E clinic in Paediatric Dentistry.
