Teacher Training Courses

INFORMATION
WHERE? All courses are held at British Council, Milan, Via Manzoni 38
WHEN? Language courses will run on Friday afternoons from 3.30 – 6pm. All other courses run Monday to
Thursday from 3.30 till 6pm. Each course lasts for 10hours.
HOW MUCH DOES IT COST? Each course costs € 125,00
HOW DO I ENROL? Details are on the attached enrolment form.
WHO DELIVERS THE COURSE? All our courses are delivered by highly qualified teacher trainers and
examiners.
LANGUAGE COURSES
September – Friday 9th, 16th, 23rd and 30th (from 3.30 – 6.00pm)
British Council will be running a series of language classes specifically designed to help teachers improve their
level and confidence in teaching using the English language. Lessons will be for two and a half hours every
Friday throughout the month of September.
The courses will be run for the following levels:
Course A/L: Level A2/B1 - Lower Intermediate Level
Course B/L: Level B2 - Upper Intermediate Level
Course C/L: Level C1/C2 - Advanced
Teachers interested in these courses are invited to take a level test at the British Council prior to enrolment.
Tests can be booked (02 772221) throughout July and from 29th August (Monday-Friday 10.00-18.00)

TEACHING METHODOLOGY AND EXAMS
WEEK 1: 5 – 8 September (from 3.30 – 6.00pm)
1: GETTING STARTED WITH STARTERS, AND MOVING ON TO MOVERS
An introductory course to the three Cambridge Young Learners Exams outlining what they consist of, who
they are for and why entering young students for them can facilitate their English learning. Above all this
short course looks at how to prepare Young Learners for these tests via motivating, stimulating and practical
class activities. The ready-to-use material and practical workshops aim to equip teachers with ready-to-go
ideas. Activities are relevant to the syllabus and task styles of the exams and include tips for improving and
maximizing student performance.
Teachers of 7-12year old learners curious to know more about Young Learners exams: Starters, Movers
and Flyers, or those who are familiar with them but want lesson ideas, are all welcome.

2: PREPARING STUDENTS FOR THE CAMBRIDGE “KEY” EXAM
(previously known as KET) - CEFR Level A2
This course is aimed at teachers from both middle schools and secondary schools who wish to improve
their students’ performance in the KEY exam. It will examine how to integrate the KEY exam into the school
curriculum and how to develop all four skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing with practical ideas
for activities to be used in class. It will also evaluate KEY exam preparation text books and help teachers
decide between the traditional KEY exam or the new “KEY for Schools” exam.

3: TEACHING IDEAS AND ACTIVITIES FOR SCUOLA ELEMENTARE TEACHERS
This course is aimed at teachers of Scuola Elementare and will look at a range of ideas that can be used in
the Elementare classroom to engage and motivate students. The course will be very practical in nature and
sessions will focus on areas such as lesson planning, language presentation and using flashcards, songs
and games with large classes. As the course is delivered in English, all participants must have at least an
Intermediate level of English.

WEEK 2: 12 – 15 September (from 3.30 – 6.00pm)
4: PREPARING STUDENTS FOR THE CAMBRIDGE “PRELIMINARY” AND “PRELIMINARY FOR
SCHOOLS” EXAM (previously known as PET) – CEFR Level B1
This course is designed for teachers from all types of secondary and middle schools who need to develop
all four skills of reading, writing, listening and speaking to guarantee the best results from their students in
this exam. The course will include activities from both the PRELIMINARY and the PRELIMINARY for
Schools exam and will examine what is required of the candidates in the speaking test and how to assess
the students’ written work according to Cambridge assessment criteria. This course will also look at how to
integrate the PRELIMINARY exam into the school curriculum and will examine exam preparation material
and course books.

5: TECHNOLOGY AND ICT
This course will look at how learning technologies are enhancing the way teachers teach. We will examine
ways of integrating the internet in class and have practical demonstrations and practice sessions using the
IWB (Interactive Whiteboard). This course will be suitable for all teachers with little or no experience of
using technologies.

6: TEACHING IDEAS AND ACTIVITIES FOR SCUOLA SUPERIORE TEACHERS
This course is aimed at teachers of Scuola Superiore and delivered entirely in English. We will look at a
range of ideas that can be used in the Superiore classroom to engage and motivate students. Participants
will increase their repertoire of teaching ideas. Sessions will include livening up literature, grammar and
language presentation, lesson planning, adapting coursebook materials and teaching advanced level
vocabulary.

WEEK 3: 19 – 22 September (from 3.30-6.00pm)
7: PREPARING STUDENTS FOR THE CAMBRIDGE “FIRST” EXAM
(Previously known as FCE) – CEFR Level B2
In this course we will look at how to develop the skills and strategies that students need for the FIRST
exam. The sessions will look at the different components of the exam and ways in which to help students
make the most of their level of English during the exam.

8: PREPARING STUDENTS FOR THE CAMBRIDGE “IELTS” EXAM
The IELTS test is growing in popularity extremely quickly. This course will give an overview of the course,
an insight into what the examiners are looking for and valuable tips for use in lessons.

9: TEACHING IDEAS AND ACTIVITIES FOR SCUOLA MEDIA TEACHERS
This course is aimed at Scuola Media teachers and delivered in English. We will look at a range of ideas
that can be used in the Media classroom to engage and motivate students. Sessions will be on areas such
as classroom management, lesson planning, improving your students’ fluency in English and developing
students’ competence in the 4 skills (reading, writing, listening and speaking)

WEEK 4: 26 – 29 SEPT (from 3.30-6.00pm)
10: PREPARING STUDENTS FOR THE CAMBRIDGE “ADVANCED” EXAM
(previously known as CAE) – CEFR Level C1
This course is aimed at secondary school teachers who want to develop all four skills of reading, writing,
listening and speaking in order to improve their students' performance in the exam. The course provides
activities and practical ideas to develop exam skills and techniques for all 5 papers of the exam. It looks at
strategies on how to approach the different tasks as well as giving guidance on how to assess students'
work using Cambridge assessment criteria.

11: CULTURE IN THE CLASSROOM
Post Second World War Britain - This seminar will examine changes in British society since the end of the
Empire and the impact that such changes have had on literature, theatre and art. Suggestions will be given
of authors, books and plays which can be used in the literature classroom along with a detailed analysis of
some of these texts.

12: TEACHING PRONUNCIATION
During this course we will look at the features of English pronunciation which pose problems for Italian
learners. We will examine a range of techniques to help students improve their intelligibility and increase
their confidence when speaking.
