STAINED GLASS WINDOW PROJECT College Prep The purpose of this project is to use linear equations and systems of linear inequalities to design a stained glass window. You will include lines with zero, undefined, positive and negative slopes. The skills of graphing and writing linear equations will be used to create your stained glass window as well as shading an inequality. This project will be worth a total of 100 assessment points. Procedure: 1. Start with the 4 sheets of graph paper (provided). Cut the edges off all of the sheets of paper, leaving only the 30x21 sheet of graph paper. 2. Neatly tape all four sheets together creating a large 60x41 sheet of graph paper. The new large graph should be taller than it is wide. 3. Label the center of the large graph as the coordinate point (0,0). 4. Create your stained glass window by drawing 4 horizontal lines, 4 vertical lines, 4 lines with a positive slope and 4 lines with a negative slope. Please use a straight edge for accuracy. If you want to use more lines, please do (but 16 is the minimum requirement)! Make sure that your lines extend all the way to the ends of the graph paper. Lightly label each line by writing the equation of the line. 5. Mount the four sheets of paper onto a piece of poster board, making a nice background. 6. Now go in and color the sections that have been created by the intersecting lines. Make sure the equations are still visible. Use colored pencils, markers, crayons, etc… in order to make your stained glass window unique and beautiful. 7. Identify the systems of inequalities that make up each shaded region. 8. On an index card, write the 16 (or more) equations of the lines and the systems of inequalities you used to create your stained glass window. Attach this card to the bottom right corner of your window. Make sure to include your name. Due date: Monday, December 15th (end of class), 2012 Here is the breakdown of all 100 points: 8 points for 4 horizontal lines, graphed neatly. 8 points for 4 vertical lines, graphed neatly. 8 points for 4 positive sloped lines, graphed neatly. 8 points for 4 negative sloped lines, graphed neatly. 28 points for the systems of inequalities, identifying the shaded regions. 20 points for the index card. THE EQUATIONS MUST BE CORRECT. 10 points for creativity, accuracy, neatness and uniqueness!! 10 points for following all procedures. I am at liberty to give extra credit for projects that are above and beyond.
