Scouting for Food
Community Good Turn
2006
“Bag Out Day”: November 4, 2006
“Bag In Day”: November 11, 2006
Dear Units,
Coming up this November we have the wonderful opportunity to sponsor a great
humanitarian community service project. This is the scouting for food project that you have
so faithfully supported in past years. This is a great way for the entire cub pack and scout
troop to be involved in an activity that serves those less fortunate.
Since 1910, the ideals of Scouting have guided young men to perform "service to others
and to the community." Responding to the plight of America's poor and hungry is a
traditional Scouting "good turn." During World War I, Boy Scouts planted vegetable
gardens to provide food for the hungry. President Roosevelt called on Scouts to collect food
for the needy during the Great Depression. Planting Victory Gardens were the Scouting
"good turns" organized during World War II. Today, Boy Scouts continue their Good Turn
efforts in community stewardship through Scouting for Food
If your unit has participated before, then you know that the bags will be available at the
October Roundtable. If this is your unit’s first time, here’s how it works:
1. Get your unit area confirmed at the October Roundtable.
2. Get the bags. Bags can be obtained at Roundtable in October or your council
office.
3. Schedule your unit a time to drop off the bags in your area on November 4th.
Remember tour permits.
4. Have the boys (and leaders) wear their full uniform.
5. Figure about one to two hours to drop off the bags. Get siblings to help if you
need to.
6. It is optional to knock on doors; just remember: use the buddy system with an
adult nearby and two deep leadership. If you need to deliver bags early in the
morning, don’t knock before 9:00 A.M.
7. Schedule the time to pick up the bags the following Saturday, November 11th.
8. Scouting for Food patches will be available at the November Roundtable.
