Please remember that the purpose of this newsletter is to keep librarians, historians, archivists, genealogists, archaeologists, educators at all levels, and those in other allied fields informed of what is going on that may be helpful in these fields so they may pass this information on to other interested parties in their locations.
South Texas is being broadly defined as beginning in Val Verde
County in the west; moving east to Austin (Travis County); and then southeast through Caldwell,
Lavaca, Jackson, and Calhoun counties to the Gulf of Mexico.
I am willing to include important events or acquisitions from other areas, in some instances, if they may be of particular usefulness to those in our area. News from our neighboring Mexican states of Tamaulipas, Nuevo Leon, and Coahuila would also be welcome.

The Journal of the Life and Culture of San Antonio , an online publication at uiw.edu/sanantonio, welcomes submissions from writers interested in expanding the understanding of San Antonio’s history and culture. The Journal will publish papers by writers who express critical information in clear and concise prose. The Journal publishes research papers and short entries on history, language, exploration, religion, biography, culture, art, architecture, and business, and all other topics relating to human experience in
Bexar County. Papers remain online perpetually. The Journal has no submission deadline; editors accept submissions continuously.
Research Papers:
The Journal publishes research articles of 4000 to 15000 words. Papers should focus on events within Bexar County and represent the highest quality of research writing on academic topics. Editors seek original research that interprets primary and secondary sources and presents insightful conclusions about San Antonio’s past. All aspects of inquiry that fall within the purview of humanities studies meet the needs of the Journal .
Anonymous, or blind, peer review by qualified scholars will determine the acceptability of submitted papers

Short Entries:
Short entries of 500 words or more use close focus to illuminate one very specific aspect of life in Bexar County. Editors seek well-written and well-documented articles that explain the experience of San Antonians to students, visitors, scholars and researchers. Entries must focus on a specific topic. For instance, the Journal will reject an entry entitled “The River
Walk” because the topic is too broad. Editors require more limited subjects such as “Robert
Hugman’s Early River Walk Drawings” or “The Politics of the 1968 River Walk
Extension.”

History
The City-Wide Easter Sunrise Association began through youth of multiple denominations that put on a sunrise service on a hill at Brooks Field in 1917. This became an annual event, with the locations varying. In 1923, Annie Weik Hugman gathered inter-denominational youth and formed formal committees to prepare for that year’s service. No programs were printed at this time, but the group continued to grow each year.
In 1935 the City-Wide Eater Sunrise Association was formally organized with the purpose of celebrating Easter with an interdenominational religious service and pageant. Beginning in 1941, the service and pageant were held in the Municipal
Auditorium every year. The group disbanded in 1969.
