Update on YSU’s Participation in the Higher Learning Commission Academy for the Assessment of Student Learning YSU has made progress in fostering meaningful and relevant assessment of student learning, including assessment of the general-education program: Piloting of LiveText—assessment and e-portfolio software that can be used across the university—continued through summer 2009. Some implementation has occurred. The General Education Committee (GEC) has undertaken revision of the generaleducation requirements, in part to facilitate assessment of general-education learning outcomes and the program as a whole. The Student Government Association (SGA) is working with the GEC to consider SGA’s proposal for a freshman-orientation course. The HLC Academy Team and the Assessment Council have served as sounding-boards for revision ideas and issues. In spring 2009, the GEC sponsored focus groups of teachers within each generaleducation “domain” and surveyed faculty, administrators, and advisors to gather data regarding the general-education requirements. The Council on Teaching and Learning (CTL), chaired by Sherry Linkon, is now an ad hoc Academic Senate committee being considered for regular Senate-committee status. The CTL has surveyed faculty and developed a plan for guiding and fostering professional development and research opportunities related to teaching and learning. YSU is implementing the Voluntary System of Accountability, which includes administering the National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) and the Collegiate Learning Assessment (CLA) to first-year and senior students. The HLC Academy team assisted with planning and will help review, discuss, and disseminate results. The first “roundtable” session of YSU committees was held in spring 2009; the second is planned for November 19, 2009. The goal of the roundtables is to encourage collaboration and sharing of information among committees and divisions—a need identified by the Higher Learning Commission and YSU’s HLC Academy team. The first roundtable succeeded in fostering communication. More cross-talk occurred; some collaborations were created. 4
