Journal Entry 3 Classifying Your Hypothesis TWO This is a short, but important journal entry. The goal here is to place your hypothesis TWO into one of three groups. For simplicity these are outlined below. For the journal entry, identify which group your hypothesis TWO belongs to, and then explain why this is so. Group 1: A single ancestor. This gives a “tree” shaped hypothesis. The one on the right is an example, but they vary a lot. Group 2: Two or more ancestors with some speciation (splitting of groups into more than one species) This gives a row of bushes – a “hedge” shaped phylogeny. These vary a lot, from a low number of groups to a high number of different bushes. The one on the right is an example, but they vary a lot. Group 3: No speciation at all – every species starts independently. This gives a whole bunch of straight lines – a blades of grass or “lawn” shaped phylogeny.
