Keeping the Multifaith Chaplaincy Green Bristol University Multifaith Chaplaincy Prepared by Rachael Fletcher (Free Church Chaplain) May 2010 As part of our submission for the Green Impact Awards in February 2009, we were asked to take part in a review of our activities in the context of making them more environmentally friendly. A wide range of new initiatives were undertaken (such as purchasing recycled paper for our copier) and existing activities were given a higher profile (such as encouraging use of our compost bin and recycling facilities). All members of the Multifaith Chaplaincy Team have an important part to play in ensuring the continued success of these activities. We hope that you will find this document is an introductory guide to what we are already doing – and that it will inspire you to suggest new ideas for greening the Multifaith Chaplaincy…! Printing Documents Aim to print double sided (where practicable). Instructions for this are above the copier and set out in this folder. Toner cartridges can be recycled by sending them in their boxes to the Senate House Porters. You can use the Internal Mail to do this. We use recycled paper in our copier. This is ordered from Ross Office Supplies. Consider whether you really need to print a hard copy of documents such as emails. It is good practice to ask individuals if they need hard copies of papers prior to meetings rather than assuming all present will need them. However the University’s Energy and Environmental Management Unit (EEMU) do not recommend only circulating papers by email - attendees may single-side print which could lead to more paper and energy being used. Collecting Used Stamps There is a collection point for these attached to the post trays. Recyling What can we recycle in the Chaplaincy? Paper: please use the blue bins in each office. Plastic: please use the bin under the counter in the kitchen. Glass: please use the bin under the counter in the kitchen. Tins: please use the bin under the counter in the kitchen. Cans: please use the box by the entrance doors. Cardboard: there is a collection point in the kitchen. Batteries: please use the bin in the General Office. There are also large containers for glass, cans, tins and cardboard near our gate. For some of these a key may be needed; please ask on where to find this. There is a container for compost in the kitchen under the counter and we have a compost bin outside opposite our entrance doors. For further information on provision for recycling in the University please refer to the ‘A – Z Of Recycling’ set out in this folder. Energy Awareness Generally lights and equipment should be switched off when not in use. However, never ever switch off the photocopier because that will make it very unhappy! Please refer to the Lighting and Equipment Responsbility Plan and Vacation Shut Down Checklist set out in this folder for details on switching off equipment during and at the end of the day, and at the end of term. We aim to use energy saving lightbulbs wherever possible in the free-standing lights in the Meeting Rooms, Quiet Room and Common Room. Our fridge and freezer is emptied periodically (usually at the end of Term). The freezer ‘defrosts’ automatically. Travel Efficient driving techniques can save up to 20% in fuel consumption. Further details are set out in this folder. Whilst it is very unlikely that Chaplaincy staff would need to use domestic air travel as part of their duties, we are aware that about 6% of carbon emissions in the UK are from aviation and we would therefore encourage the use of alternative transport. We have limited car-parking space at the Multifaith Chaplaincy and would encourage the use of public transport, walking or cycling where possible. We have a number of cycle stands where you can lock your cycle. A selection of bus routes are easily accessible either outside The Hawthorns or on Whiteladies Road. The University's Travel Webpage has a useful guide to public transport at: www.bristol.ac.uk/university/maps Buying Fairtrade and Environmentally Friendly Products All coffee and tea should have the Fairtrade logo. Coffee is ordered from Carwardines on a regular basis. Tea can be bought in bulk from Oxfam on Cotham Hill. If you need to buy other supplies (such as milk, sugar, washing up liquid) for the Multifaith Chaplaincy then consider buying Local, Organic or Fairly Traded.
