50th Anniversary – Saint Anselm Church
“Companions on the Journey”
For 50 years, people have come from various neighborhoods in Philadelphia and elsewhere and
moved into Saint Anselm Parish with its neighborhoods of Parkwood Manor, Rambler Park, Latham Place and
Inglewood. Saint Anselm Parish has been the place where people have formed relationships and have become
companions to one another.
Our 50th Anniversary Year calls us to celebrate and give thanks to God for the blessings the people
of Saint Anselm Parish have been given throughout the history of our Parish. Many, many, many people have
shared the blessings of their time, talent, and treasure and in doing so have enabled Saint Anselm Parish to be a
good parish fulfilling its mission. The month of November provides us with the opportunity to bring to mind our
deceased parishioners. Throughout Saint Anselm’s 50th November as a Parish, let us Honor our Deceased
Parishioners for their legacy and contribution. Presently, we are reaping the harvest of what our deceased
parishioners have sown years ago.
On June 6, 1962, 935 families became the founding families of Saint Anselm Parish. They answered
the call to become a community of faith; to gather for Sunday Mass; to build; to provide a school, an addition to
the school, a third addition, and another school building; to bring Parish organizations to life; to teach, to minister,
to coach, etc., etc., etc….. Many of those who were here in the 1960’s, 1970’s, 1980’s, 1990’s, and even 2,000’s have
died and have gone before us to the other side of life. Before dying, however, so many deceased parishioners
contributed to the vitality and well being of this Church. Let us honor them for their legacy and contribution
throughout this month of November.
+ Honoring our Deceased Parishioners +
for their Legacy & Contribution
Naming Deceased Parishioners & their contribution: Please help us identify Deceased Parishioners who
by their presence or ministry or involvement or witness or Catholic living contributed to the life and well
being of Saint Anselm Parish. Please write their name, birth year and year of death on front of the form
provided in the pews; e.g.
(1st line): John Doe
(2nd line): 1912 – 1987. On back of the form
provided, identify their contribution(s) e.g. Devoted Mother (Father); faithful Catholic; holy
woman/man; coach; teacher; Carnival worker; Benefactor; Lector (or other Liturgical Minister);
Officer/Member of ________ (name organization); Volunteer, etc., etc., etc…..
Place the form on the table set up along the pews at the break in the Church
Artistic Imagery
Crowns: In 2 Timothy 4:6, St. Paul speaks about his approaching death and how he has run the
race, competed well, lived a life of faith in accord with the Gospel and says “a merited
crown awaits me.” What Paul says of himself, can be said of our deceased parishioners
whose memory we honor. A merited crown awaited them in heaven.
The Thanksgiving Cornucopia: The cornucopia is a symbol of abundance. The cornucopia is
used at Thanksgiving as a symbol for blessings and a fruitful harvest. We use the
cornucopia in the display to honor our deceased parishioners to express our
thanksgiving to God for the blessings they have been to Saint Anselm Parish and for the
abundant harvest they have made possible.

All Souls Day – Wednesday, November 2nd
Dear Parishioners,
Masses: 6:30 AM (Church)
8:30 AM
Halloween
All Hallows Eve is an ancient name for the
evening before the feast of all Saints. All Saints Day
celebrates the earthly pilgrimage of faithful
Christians and their homecoming to heaven. In the
past, the Feast of All Saints became an occasion for
people to make a pilgrimage. The entire process of a
pilgrimage – making a journey and reaching a
destination – was a symbol of achieving homecoming
in heaven.
Trick or Treat is a neighborhood pilgrimage,
a first cousin of the tradition of caroling from door to
door at Christmas. Decorating and illuminating,
throwing doors wide open to guests have become
customary acts in many Catholic homes. “A guest in
the home is Christ in your home” – so says a proverb
– and you can’t have a Christian festival unless
Christ is invited inside.
Not too long ago in schools and towns, All
Hallows Eve (Halloween) was an occasion for
parades – another kind of pilgrimage. Marching
represents the longing of saints to enter God’s
heavenly home.
On the feast of all saints, the Gospel passage
of the Beatitudes is proclaimed. Like trick or
treaters dressed every which way, the company of
heaven will be a raging lot – the poor in spirit, the
meek, the mourning. One day, God willing, we will
be welcomed into God’s own house. Safe at home,
our true home, we will take off our masks – the sins
and sorrows of this world – and be overwhelmed by
God’s generous and amazing grace.
All Saints Day – Tuesday, November 1
Masses will be at 5:00 PM Vigil (Monday)
6:30 AM, 8:30 AM &
7:00 PM
This Feast gives praise and thanks to God for
the saints whose lives inspire our living and whose
love and faith testifies to the power and presence of
the Spirit at work in their lives.
Aware that God is the source of all holiness,
these men and women who are now saints in heaven
acknowledged their need for the Lord to grace and
help them become faith-filled and loving Christians.
The Saints are our brothers and sisters. May our
celebration of the Saints inspire us to become like
them.

Remembering
Deceased
Police
Officers,
Firefighters and Paramedics – Saint Anselm
Church has a very nice custom of commemorating
those police officers, firefighters and paramedics who
died in the line of duty or by other causes. Anyone
who would like one of these persons prayed for by
name is asked to call the Parish Center.
A
commemoration of these people will be done during
the 8:30 AM Mass on Wednesday, November 2nd.
Special Mass for our Deceased Parishioners &
your Deceased Loved Ones
A special Mass will be offered on Wednesday
evening (November 2nd) at 7:30 PM for those who
have died and for all who are listed on the All Souls
envelopes. Please join us as we pray for your
deceased loved ones.
There will also be a special commemoration
of those parishioners who died this past year and
whose funeral liturgy was celebrated here.
Remembering Our Deceased Loved Ones
Throughout the month of November, we
remember in prayer our deceased loved ones. A
Memorial Shrine has been set up on the altar under
the statue of our Blessed Mother.
The Book of the Dead lists the names of those
parishioners from the last seven years who have died
and whose funeral liturgies were in our Church.
On the envelopes are the names submitted to
us by parishioners. Please remember all in your
prayers and good works. Through the mercy of God,
may each and every one of our deceased loved ones
be graced with new life in heaven.
Memorials around Saint Anselm Properties
Our 50th Anniversary calls us to remember
the Memorials that were made at various times in
our history when there was construction or
refurbishing. As you pass thru our buildings during
November, please pause at the Memorials and say a
prayer for those who are named. The Memorials can
be found in the:
Church:
+ under each stained glass Window
+ Statues
+ on the Memorial Boards:
between the Confessionals;
near window at the Crying Room;
the side of Fr. Friel’s Confessional
+ under each stained glass window in
the Priests’ sacristy
Parish Center – built in 1987:
+ on the Memorial Board in Hallway
+ on the back of each Office Door
Our Lady of Victory Hall – built in 1995
+ on the Memorial Boards on either side of
the stage
I.H.M. Spirituality Center; Immaculate Heart of
Mary Chapel; Rectory – remodeling of the
former Convent in 2006

in the Cana Room;
+ on the Plaque in the Chapel;

Announced Mass Intentions 2012
Beginning Wednesday, November 2nd
9:00 – 11:00 AM Church Hall
after 11:00 AM Parish Center
We will follow the procedures as in previous years.
So that
+ the opportunity to arrange for Announced Mass
Intentions may be available to more people
+ people who are homebound
+ people who are working and are not able to be
here on Wednesday, November 2nd at 9:00 AM,
there will be a limit of three requests per family and,
of the three requests, the person will be limited to
only one request for a Saturday evening or Sunday
Mass Intention.
This limit will last from Wednesday,
November 2nd until Monday, November 21st. During
this time, the homebound and people who work may
come to the Parish Center and arrange for Mass
Intentions.
Beginning on Monday, November 21st, any
person who already has arranged for three Mass
Intentions may request more weekday Mass
Intentions if they wish.
Please limit each Intention to one name unless
it is for a deceased couple or for the Deceased
Members of “The Doe Family”.
Candidacy for 1st Confession & 1st Communion
This weekend during the 10:00 AM Liturgy,
41 students in our CCD Program and 29 students in
our school are celebrating a rite of candidacy for the
sacraments of Reconciliation and Eucharist.
During this Liturgy the children are
celebrating their call to be followers of Jesus. They
are expressing their desire to be connected to Jesus
and to have communion with him so that a spirit of
love, peace, and goodness will continue to grow
within them.
The children will be presented with a
placemat which artistically expresses the way that
they will follow the lead of Jesus. The placemat was
drawn by Cara D’Angelo, one of our Parishioners
who is in her college freshman year. Thank you,
Cara, for sharing your artistic talent.
Please remember our children and their
parents in prayer.
Annual Collection – Saint Charles Seminary
The annual collection for Saint Charles
Seminary takes place during November. Please note
that the Seminary Appeal is a mail appeal. You will
be receiving an envelope in the mail. Please mail
your contribution to the seminary. There will not be
a second collection here.
Saint Charles Borromeo Seminary has been
preparing men for the priesthood for over one
hundred and seventy years. Our Seminary also
offers the Church Ministry program for the laity.
The Diaconate Program is also at the Seminary.
Many Catholic school teachers, CCD catechists,
Religious Sisters and Priests also attend classes at the
Seminary. The seminary is also the site for Vocation
Discernment Programs, retreats, days of recollection
and faith formation programs.
God Bless You,
Father Dunleavy

The New Roman Missal
Beginning with the 1st Sunday of Advent
(November 27th) Catholic churches throughout the
United States will begin using the 3rd Edition of the
Roman Missal
This Week’s Focus:
Invitation to Holy Communion
“Lord, I am not worthy that you should enter
under my roof.”
These words are taken directly from the
Gospel of Luke and recount the humility of the
centurion who asked Christ to heal his sick servant.
At every Mass, we take these words upon our
own lips as we prepare for Christ to enter into the
home of our hearts in Holy Communion. This is a
constant reminder that we have become the Temple
of the Holy Spirit and that the Lord has come to
dwell within us.
There is certainly nothing we can do to make
ourselves worthy of this great gift. Yet, there is
someone who has the power to make us worthy.
“Only say the word and my soul shall be
healed.” Christ has the power to render us worthy
for His divine indwelling. Our souls can only be made
worthy by the forgiveness available to us because of
Christ.
In order that we may gain the greatest benefit
from our participation in the Eucharistic offering, we
must be sure that we are properly disposed. For this
reason, whenever we have fallen from the state of
grace through mortal sin, we must present ourselves
for sacramental Confession so that Christ can “say
the word” to heal and forgive our souls. Nothing we
can do can take away the stain of sin: this is the work
of Christ that we celebrate in the Sacraments of the
Church.
Allowing Him to say the healing words of
forgiveness opens our hearts to receive the grace that
makes us holy and gives us hope that we will become
like the “blessed … called to the supper of the
Lamb.”
Saint Anselm All Star
Betty Vernalis
Betty and her husband, Ed, were born in
Luzerne, PA, just outside Wilkes Barre. They
married in 1964 and moved to St. Martin of
Tours Parish. In 1969, Betty and her family
moved into St. Anselm Parish. Their two
daughters attended St. Anselm School and
Nazareth Academy. Susan currently resides in
Virginia; Christine lives in Minnesota. Betty
makes several trips a year to visit her two
grandchildren in Minnesota.
Betty has been a dependable and hardworking
volunteer over the years with our Million Dollar
Adventure, the Ladies of St. Anselm (Bid & Buy,
Candy Sales, Bingo, Christmas Bazaar, etc.), and
lends her expertise in the kitchen during our
Carnival. She is currently Treasurer for the
Ladies of Saint Anselm and, for the last five
years, has run their New York Trip to see a
Broadway Show and dinner. And, if you would
like to purchase a Saint Anselm Lottery Ticket,
she sells them too!
Betty has found inspiration from many of the
priests over the years, from Father Kowal to
Father Dunleavy. She has always felt that there
is a great deal of support from the lay faculty
and the Sisters of the Immaculate Heart of Mary
when they were here.
Betty acknowledges how well organized our
parish is and the people who are always ready to
pitch in whenever there is a need. She can
always count on parishioners and neighbors to
lend a helping hand.
Betty is a proud member of Saint Anselm Parish
and carries that spirit wherever she goes. Her
enthusiasm is contagious and inspires others to
become involved. We, too, are proud of you,
Betty, and your many accomplishments.

AID FOR FRIENDS
Following the example of Mother Teresa, it will
enable us, as a Parish, to continue its work of
“Reaching Out” to those forgotten “next door
neighbors”. And, like Mother Teresa, it enables
us as a Parish to show our love toward the
seemingly unlovable, the poorest of the poor.
Can you help replenish our meals by
occasionally preparing a little extra? We are low
on meals and need your support. Containers for
meals may be picked up in the SCRIP Office
next to the freezer. When you fill the container,
please return it to the freezer. God bless you for
your kindness.
