Vocal and Speech Techniques
This is a three-year course for graduate acting students. The course follows a careful progression,
which guides students toward a free and flexible vocal instrument integrated with all aspects of their
actor training. Students learn to identify and release habitual tensions and limiting vocal habits, build
speaking resonance and range, and sharpen articulators. They also study anatomy as it pertains to
vocal production, the International Phonetic Alphabet, dialects, verse, poetry, and the application of
voice and speech principles to a range of theatrical styles.
Voice & Speech for Actors
This course provides an overview of how the human voice works and how to keep it healthy.
Students utilize voice exercises to develop a physical kinesthetic awareness of the body and voice,
relaxation, breath support, resonance, and placement through the conceptual work of Fitzmaurice,
Turner, Houfek, Feldenkrais, and Laban/Bartenieff. Voice exercises are then applied to text. Open
only to undergraduate theater majors.

Fall 2010 – Spring 2012

Voice & Speech for Actors
This is a full-year fundamental technique course that develops the actor’s breath, tone, range of
voice, and the muscles of articulators in conjunction with the body as a whole. Through an
integrated approach to voice and movement, the student begins to develop a balance among the body,
voice and diction that is responsive to moment-to-moment impulses. Students learn the International
Phonetic Alphabet, anatomy, and the application of voice and speech principles to poetic text. Vocal
techniques employed include those of Clifford Turner, Lessac, Linklater, Houfek, and Fitzmaurice.
The movement work includes Laban, Bartenieff Fundamentals, and Feldenkrais Method.
Voice & Speech Help Room
Two-hour tutorial sessions held three times each month for students who want extra help in the area
of voice, speech, and/or text work. Students who attend can be upper classmen who need to be
coached on Shakespeare, Ibsen, Shaw, or Chekhov and/or sophomores confused by IPA or how to
produce optimum vocal resonance.

THEATRICAL REVIEWS
BARCELONA
“Anne Marie Nest, whom we’ve seen and admired in this play festival before, is at the top of her game
here as Irene. Attractive, energetic, and above all, absolutely fearless, Nest grasps the essential goofiness,
wildness, and, paradoxically, the hidden fragility of the nutty but not really-so-nutty-at-all Irene whose
fears of a deadly dull future life can only find expression in ridiculousness. Nest’s virtuoso performance
in this play is all-in. If CATF handed out its own version of the Tonys at the end of each festival, Nest
would cop the Best Actress award hands-down for her performance in Barcelona. It’s that great.”
--T.L. Ponick, The Washington Times
MY NAME IS RACHEL CORRIE
"Watching both shows in one day does provide an entirely unexpected
benefit - an introduction to a gifted actress.
As Rachel, Anne Marie Nest is so buoyant with joy that she nearly
breaks free of gravity...and in Lonesome Hollow, she expresses a range of
intense emotions, from an unquenchable love...to stricken panic."
--Baltimore Sun
"Nest is by turns exuberant, vehement and cheeky, flashing a
crinkly-eyed smile, and she underscores the expressiveness and
literary timbre of Corrie's diaries."
--Celia Wren, The Washington Post
MR. MARMALADE
“Once every few years, CATF blows you away. ‘Mr. Marmalade” is one of those
times… Nest plays young Lucy with abandon and gives this year’s best festival
performance…The miracle is how she makes such a creature believable as someone
who’s knowledgeable about cocaine, sex, exotic teas and so on. Such a creature doesn’t
exist in real life, yet Nest creates someone whose verisimilitude we never question.”
--Joey DiGuglielmo, The Washington Times
Weekender
“Played to beguiling effect by an adult actress, Anne Marie Nest, the 4-year-old Lucy is
a precocious sponge in tutu and jammies…Unger and Nest manage in a nifty fashion to
embody preschool characters without condescension.”
--Peter Marks, The Washington Post
“…Nest captures Lucy’s 4-year-old mannerisms so authentically that when the play takes
a Medea-style turn at the end, the imagery is no less creepy.”
--J. Wynn Rousuck, The Baltimore Sun
MISREADINGS
“Jenna Stern and Anne Marie Nest...could threaten not to have an agenda for the length
of an entire play and still be fascinating.”
