Lions, Start Your
Engines!
A Message from Governor Jim
Happy New Year! We hope that you all had a nice
holiday season, got rested up, and are now ready to
go back to work for Lions! Other than the
occasional party, Lions activities seem to taper off
toward the end of December but come back full
force about a week into January. Districts 5M6 and
5M9 had there Mid-Winter conventions the first
weekend of the month. We attended the 5M6
convention which was held at the Marriot in
Bloomington. It was fun to spend some time with a
few of our fellow Governors and their spouses as
we haven’t been together since October. DG Wally
and his crew put together a nice convention and we
thank them for the hospitality.
With the Lions year half gone, it is time to take
stock of how your club is doing and to review the
goals that we set for ourselves last summer. Has
your club membership increased since June 30? If
not, it is time to sign up some new members. A
good place to look for them is to look back 5, 10, or
even 15 years in your records and see who may
have dropped out with good reason back then.
Chances are the reason that the member resigned no
longer exists and they are ready to again become a
Lion. One of my goals for the year is to have every
club have one more member at the end of the year
than they had at the start of the year. Please help
me reach that goal.
Family membership with reduced International dues
is now a reality. Keep this in mind when recruiting
new members. Also, if you missed the deadline for
the January billing, get the paperwork in to
International now and it will be in effect for the July
billing. While this is not a huge sum, $19.50 a year
is a nice reduction in your cost of being a Lion.
The 5M4 Mid-Winter convention is being held at
the Holiday Inn in Willmar January 26-28, 2007.
Elsewhere in the newsletter is a schedule of events.
The planning committee has worked hard in putting
together a program which should be both
entertaining and educational. Conventions are
where you can pick up ideas to take home and use
in your own club and community. We hope to see
many of you there.
January is not too early for nominating committees
to be meeting and putting together a slate of
candidates for the various offices in your club. This
year it will be an absolute must that elections be
held no later that March because of the accelerated
Officer Training schedule that is being used this
year. There will be a training session in each zone
during the month of April or early May. This year
EVERY club President and Secretary WILL be
trained as to what their duties consist of. Please
assist our district leaders by getting your elections
done early.
If your club has not yet contributed to the Leader
Dog 30-30 Campaign or to Campaign Sightfirst II,
the Parade of Green at the Mid-Winter would be a
good opportunity to do so. Also, please remember
that if you have contributed to any of the Lions
Charities during this Lions year, please make note
of the amounts and drop a slip in the Parade of
Green Box which this year will be on the
Registration-Credentials tables.
To wind up the column for this month, Marge and I
would like to thank everyone for the great
hospitality that we are receiving as we visit your
clubs. The term “Minnesota Nice” doesn’t even
come close to describing the way that we have been
treated! THANK YOU!
Keep up the good work out there and remember,
“Put Your Club in a Position to Win”.
Donations for the Band
Needed Now
Last year our Multiple District 5M
donated over $20,000.00 to help send a
band to the International Convention.
Let's see if we can do better than that
this year. Please send your personal or
club check payable to Winona Cotter
Marching Band to Ex. Sec. Bob Harms,
72530 CSAH 27, Dassel MN 553252804.
Going on a
Lion’s Journey
with Vice District Governor Deb Harms
My December journey was not something I even remotely expected.
Some people would say it was a bump in the road. It was a pretty big
bump if you ask me. Before Thanksgiving we got the news that Bob
might have an issue with his prostate. Well, it most certainly was an
issue. It turned out he had prostate cancer and it was moderately aggressive so the wait and watch
option was not an option for him. He decided to have his prostate removed and surgery was
scheduled for December 21. Some Christmas present!
The surgery he elected to have done is a new type surgery called a daVinci prostatectomy. It is a
computer assisted robotic laparoscopy type surgery. The surgeon sits at a computer several feet
away from the table Bob laid on and used 5 small holes in his abdomen to remove the prostate. The
surgery is less invasive, less blood is lost than the other type of surgery and recovery is quicker. He
got out of the hospital two days following the surgery. Two weeks following surgery the only thing still
bothering him is he tires a bit easier and feels the need to take a nap in the afternoon, otherwise he is
normal (as normal as he gets that is). The results are that the cancer was completely in the prostate
and the surgeon got it all!! There is no follow up radiation or chemo needed. Now that really was a
great Christmas present!! Praise the Lord!!
Enough about that. On the Lions front, there was another zone meeting to attend and a couple of
meetings for the mid-winter convention. Planning is going well for the mid winter. Plans are for
everyone to learn some new things about Lions, share ideas, meet with friends and just have a great
time!!
I spent some time this month working on what goals I would like to accomplish during my term as
District Governor. I don’t have everything cast in concrete yet, but I have some good ideas started.
The main thing I know I want to do is to encourage clubs and Lions members to do the best they can
at serving their communities and to have as much fun doing it as they can.
I just received my third assignment from Lions Clubs International. I haven’t read it all yet, but it
appears that I need to take a good look at the membership of the Lions Clubs in our District and
develop some plans to help the membership of the District grow. This assignment isn’t due until May
15, and that’s a good thing, since it looks like it will take some time to go through the resources at
Lions Clubs International’s website and review everything the assignment says to review.
Bob and I are looking forward to seeing everybody at the mid winter convention. The Kingston Lions
Club is having a hospitality room this year, so stop by and see us at the Kingston International Café’.
Don’t forget to contact any of the MERLO Team members if there is any way they can help your club
be the best you can be. Contact Brian Sheehan for Membership issues, Morrie Faehnrich for new
club Extension possibilities, Ryan Rustan for member Retention help, Lori Sheehan for Leadership
training and Ed Holst for Orientation training.
And the journey continues ……

From U to You
HAPPY NEW YEAR! Some Hearing Trustees requested information to share at their Midwinter Conventions. After
I sent it, it occurred that others might benefit from this info too. I have arranged for some speakers. I have brochures
which describe the services offered at the Lions Children’s Hearing Center. Let me know if you need some. Don’t
forget about the video about the LCHC – use that. Call Bob Nemeth, 651-484-6145, to reserve the two displays from
the Hearing Center. Onward…
The following story is that of a child who has recently been seen at the Lions Children’s Hearing Center that you can
share at your convention. I can’t reveal name or hometown for privacy reasons, but know that this family made and
continues to make a significant drive for the excellent, coordinated services offered at the LCHC.
This child was born in September of 2005 and failed a newborn hearing screen in the hospital. Four months later,
parents brought the child for follow-up testing and he received a borderline score on the hearing test so parents let it
go at that. But because of that initial failed hearing test, parents again expressed concern about their child’s hearing
at his one-year checkup. An audiologist in the child’s hometown did another hearing test which revealed severe to
profound hearing loss in both ears, and referred parents to LCHC. Parents made the long drive to Minneapolis and,
in one day, saw an audiologist, an otolaryngologist, a geneticist, a developmental psychologist and the aural rehab
specialist (speech language). The child was immediately fit with loaner hearing aids free of charge courtesy of the
Lions Hearing Aid Loaner Bank. The audiologist performed more hearing tests to determine the exact range of
hearing loss. The otolaryngologist examined the child and found no physical abnormalities with the child’s ears
which can sometimes cause or exacerbate deafness. The geneticist drew blood and took a family history. She
determined that the child had a genetic mutation which affects neural pathways between the brain and the ear
resulting in deafness. So the child had sensorineural hearing loss caused by genetic mutation. This clued the care
team in that this child should also have regular ophthalmologic screening and kidney testing as this genetic mutation
also sometimes causes vision and kidney abnormalities. The developmental psychologist observed the child and
spoke with the parents to determine family dynamics and parents’ expectations for their child. The aural rehab
specialist observed the child’s vocalizations and discussed with parents different options for communication ranging
from signing to cued speech to completely spoken. The team met together to share their findings with each other,
and with the parents. Since the child was not getting adequate benefit from hearing aids to learn to talk, he was
determined to be an excellent candidate for a cochlear implant which parents were also in favor of. An appointment
for implantation was made at that time and the family returned to LCHC two months later when Dr. Frank Rimell
performed the surgery. The LCHC team wrote a plan of care and helped the family arrange for audiology, speech
therapy and an early childhood specialist from the child’s hometown school district to come to the family’s home for
treatment as described in the plan. The family will return to the LCHC about every 3 months for monitoring.
As we know, earlier is better in diagnosis and treatment of childhood deafness. The first year of a child’s life goes by
in an instant so there is great urgency to navigating the complex issues surrounding deafness. Only 3 months passed
between this child’s diagnosis of hearing loss and cochlear implantation. If the child’s parents had had to determine
who to see and make all those appointments on different days in different locations, treatment would undoubtedly
have taken much longer, been much more difficult for the family, and probably be less coordinated. The child was
only recently implanted but parents report he is vocalizing like crazy and responds when they speak to him.
Prognosis is that this child will communicate on par with his hearing peers and be able to attend school in a regular
classroom with minimal assistance. This is one of many many success stories from the LCHC.
Since 2000, the Lions Hearing Foundation has provided $1,128,594 to hearing research, in addition to the $925,000
allotted to the Lions Children’s Hearing Center. It’s difficult to attribute larger grants directly to seed money
provided by Lions but it is significant that many of the faculty who have received Lions funding over the years now
have grants, e.g. Peter Santi $881,219 from National Institutes of Health, Steven Juhn $950,000 from NIH, Kathy
Daly $2,510,728 from National Center For Disease Control, Jizhen Lin $148,000 from NIH, Frank Ondrey has a
large grant from the National Cancer Institute.
Kathy Daly was funded this past fall which for a study which comes under the auspices of the LCHC, which as you
know, has clinic, research and outreach missions. She will study Barriers To Followup of Newborn Screening –
some of the parents whose babies fail a newborn screen do not seek additional testing or treatment. Is it due to
financial reasons? Lack of information? Pediatrician discourages? This is a very practical study that directly affects
parents and children with hearing loss.
