Privileging for Biventricular Implantable Pacemakers For Cardiologists
I.
Initial Privileging
Practitioners who have received training in cardiology and subsequently hold privileges to
implant permanent pacemakers at Venice Regional Medical Center shall:

be board certified or eligible in adult cardiology
have current privileges to perform dual chamber pacemaker implantation at Venice
Regional Medical Center
Provide documentation of appropriate training in an approved fellowship training program
completed in 2008 or later or having completed an appropriate training course for the
implantation, successfully pass the International Board of Heart Rhythm Examiners
(NAPExAM) examination of Special Competency in Cardiac Pacing and Cardioversion
Defibrillation for the Physician and provide appropriate documentation of either a
minimum of 5 proctored successful coronary sinus access and lead placements within the
last 2 years for practitioners with no prior experience or documentation of successful
completion of a minimum of 40 coronary sinus access and lead placements within the last
two years for those with prior experience.
Reappoint/Proficiency
All practitioners with no prior experience who are credentialed for biventricular implantable
pacemaker implantations shall be monitored for the first fifteen cases. Performance of a
minimum of 5 cases within 2 years must be performed to maintain proficiency.
Privileging for Biventricular Implantable Defibrillators
I.
Initial Privileging
Practitioners who receive training in cardiology and who currently hold privileges to implant
automatic cardio defibrillators at Venice Regional Medical Center shall:
1. be board certified or eligible in adult cardiology
2. currently hold privileges for automatic cardio defibrillator implantation
3. Provide documentation of appropriate training in an approved fellowship training program
completed in 2008 or later or having completed an appropriate training course for the
implantation, successfully pass the International Board of Heart Rhythm Examiners
(NAPExAM) examination of Special Competency in Cardiac Pacing and Cardioversion
Defibrillation for the Physician and provide appropriate documentation of either a minimum of
5 proctored successful coronary sinus access and lead placements within the last 2 years for
practitioners with no prior experience or documentation of successful completion of a
minimum of 40 biventricular implantable defibrillator placements including coronary sinus
access and lead placements within the last two years for those with prior experience.
II.
Reappoint/Proficiency
All practitioners with no prior experience who have credentials to implant automatic cardio
defibrillators shall be monitored for at least the first fifteen cases, at least 10 of which must be
initial implants. Performance of a minimum of 5 cases within 2 years must be performed to
maintain proficiency.
