Lucius Junius Brutus (6th C. B.C.)- nephew of the last Roman king Tarquinius
Superbus. Famous for leading a revolt against the king & proclaiming the Roman
republic in 509 B.C. Model of great virtues.
Horatius Cocles- hero in defeating the Etruscans. Famous for standing alone against
the Etruscans on a bridge over the Tiber that the Romans were destroying from their
side. Once the bridge was destroyed, Horatius jumped into the Tiber river and swam
(in his armor) to safety; Defended Pons Sublicius from Lars Porsena.
Virgilio- poet; writer of epic poem, The Aeneid.
Gaius Julius Caesar (July 12, 100 BC - March 15, 44 BC)- a Roman military and
political leader. He played an important role in the transformation of the Roman
Republic into the Roman Empire. Part of 1st triumvirate
Gaius Marius- famous for organizing the army & his great leadership skills that led
to many victories in battles.; Seen as third founder of Rome because he defeated the
Germanic tribes and
Rhea Silvia- mother of twins Romulus & Remus, founders of Rome.
Trajan- one of Rome's most outstanding emperors & soldiers. Established many
public works during his reign- including roads, harbors, & imperial fund.
Constance the Great- 1st Christian emperor of the Roman empire. Unifier of the
divided empire. Moved capital to Byzantium, renaming it Constantinopolis.

consuls.
Early Republic: The first two elected leaders of Rome were Lucius Iunius Brutus
and Lucius Tarquinius Collatinus (509BC)
Collinatus: people did not like that he was a Tarquin, so he resigned from the Roman
office.
Cincinnatus (460BC): farmer-Patrician, led the war against the Aequians and
returned to farming after his rule.
Marcus Tullius Cicero:(63 BC) Roman orator, poet, philosopher, and consul.
Associated with trying to assassinate Cataline and overthrow republic; he was exiled
for a period of time.
Lucius Caecilius Metellus: (251 BC) Defeated Carthage by scaring their elephants in
battle. Said to have been blinded while trying to save a statue from fire.
Gnaeus Pompeius Magnus: Pompey the Great, Roman general who defeated pirate
& Mithridates, driven out by Julius Caesar; Part of 1st triumvirate.
Marcus Antonius (44 BC): Staff of Caesar, helped drive out Pompey. Lover of
Cleopatra(last pharaoh of Egypt); Part of 2nd Triumvirate and killed by Octavian

Crassus: Part of 1st triumvirate and was the wealthiest man of Roman history
