Biotechnology Project: Creating a Transgenic Organism
Task: You are now an Amgen research scientist employed to come up with a new
transgenic organism that would be useful to society. Your organism can be derived from
plants, animals or bacteria but it must have a purpose for society. You must meet the
following criteria:
1. Show what your organism looks like and/or explain its unique quality (for
example, the Flavor Saver tomato looks like a tomato)
2. Provide a gene sequence for both your organisms (remember transgenic is TWO
organisms), explain which restriction enzyme you would use and demonstrate
how this enzyme would work. (Hint: use of colors to separate one sequence from
the other is suggested)
3. Explain how you would duplicate this organism and then separate out the DNA
you need.
4. Create an ad campaign promoting your organism and its benefits.
5. Be prepared to present your organism on Wednesday March 14th.
Grading:
1. _______/ 20 points (10 points for drawing & 10 points for explanation)

restriction enzyme, 10 points for showing outcome)
