Lincoln Hospital Psychology Externship Training Program
The Hospital
Lincoln Medical and Mental Health Center is one of New York City’s premier acute care
hospitals. Located in Downtown Bronx, Lincoln is a teaching hospital renowned for its
Centers of Excellence, and a recognized industry leader in the implementation of state-ofthe art medical technology and best practices. Our team of highly trained and caring
medical professionals is dedicated to providing the highest quality health care that is safe,
compassionate, culturally competent and patient-centered.
Externship Training
The Psychology Externship experience at Lincoln offers trainees in-depth patient care,
clinical supervision, and extensive didactics. Individual training experiences may be
somewhat flexible to accommodate the requirements of various academic programs, and
the desires of Externs. All Externship schedules must include Tuesdays, and externs may
work anywhere from 16 to 24 hours per week, depending upon their interest, availability
and doctoral program requirements. Externs train either in the Child and Adolescent
Track or in the Adult Track and must apply to one or the other. The tracks are explained
below. To augment Track-related experience, Externs may opt to add Child, Adolescent,
and/or Adult testing experience and Adult Track Externs may opt to gain experience on
the Lincoln Hospital Consultation/Liaison Psychiatry Service. In addition to clinical
training, supervision and didactics, all externs will be provided with daily meal vouchers
to be used at The Tower Café in Lincoln Medical and Mental Health Center.
The Adult Outpatient Clinic
Location. The Adult Outpatient Psychiatric Clinic is located on the 7th Floor of
Lincoln Hospital (Unit 7B).
Facilities: The Adult Outpatient Psychiatric Clinic accommodates between 19,000
and 22,000 visits yearly from community residents seeking mental health
services. It provides individual, group, couple and family therapy, psychological
testing, medication management, as well as referral to other agencies.
Services. The Adult Outpatient Psychiatric Clinic provides comprehensive
treatment to patients representing a broad spectrum of psychopathology and
service needs.
Goals: The goal of this placement is to provide the Extern with a realistic experience of
the professional activities and skills required in a typical day in an outpatient clinic in a
community-based hospital. Psychology Externs have the opportunity for a varied
experience in terms of diagnostic categories following DSM-IV guidelines, and the use of
diverse psychotherapy modalities within a psychiatric team approach.
Extern's Participation. According to interests and needs, Externs participate two to three
days a week on the unit. Psychology Externs on this service provide intake,
psychodiagnostic services, consultation, psychotherapy (including group psychotherapy),
and psychoeducation. Externs have the opportunity to provide consultation to medical
units and other departments within the hospital. In addition they provide individual
psychotherapy and conduct screening interviews. Under the supervision of licensed
psychologists, interns also evaluate, assess, diagnose, and recommend modalities of
treatment for clients entering the outpatient services.
Child/Adolescent Psychiatric Services (CAPS)
Location. CAPS is located on the 4th floor (Unit 4-A) at Lincoln Hospital.
Services. CAPS provides family-oriented psychotherapy services to children and
adolescents, as well as parent-child counseling services. This latter service helps
parents to understand and cope with the child's disorder. CAPS provides
services to children, adolescents and families with a multiplicity of behavioral
problems from age 5 to 18.
Goals:
• To become familiar with the process of intake, psychosocial assessment, and
psychological assessment of children and adolescents;
• To provide individual, group, and family treatment utilizing a variety of
modalities and approaches;
• To co-lead groups for children and/or parents; and
• To develop the psychology Extern's competence in cognitive behavior therapy,
play therapy, parent training, and family therapy.
Extern's participation: The Extern is expected to complete the following for each
assigned case:
• Treatment plans, within 30 days of case assignment, and treatment plan
updates every three months;
• Utilization review, in which a review of the case is made 30 days after
admission. The Certification of Quarterly Review addresses the need for
continued treatment every three months;
• Transfer summary if the case is transferred to another clinician;
• Termination summary if the case is closed;
• Contact with school, foster care, and other community-based agencies.
Didactics
The Externs are provided access to the year-long didactic experiences offered by
our APA-accredited Psychology Internship Program. These experiences include:
• Weekly Psychology Seminars. A variety of topics of importance to
professional psychologists are presented by staff psychologists and
psychiatrists. Every Tuesday morning, Externs are provided two onehour long courses on topics including but not limited to: PTSD,
developmental disorders, projective testing, and substance abuse
treatment.
• Clinical Colloquia. 2-4 week specialized training on the following areas:
family therapy, play therapy, neuropsychological testing, systems theory,
forensic psychological assessment, group therapy, issues in an urban
community setting, and treatment strategies in child abuse.
• Weekly Psychiatry Grand Rounds. The Department provides lectures by noted
speakers on numerous aspects of psychiatric/psychological practice. Past
speakers have included psychiatrists and psychologists from the NYU
Child Study Center, NIMH, Columbia Presbyterian, Fordham University,
the American Institute for Cognitive Therapy, and the Minuchin Center
for the Family.
• Pediatric Psychology Seminars. A lecture series is provided to pediatric and
psychology staff focusing on normal child developmental problems and
child psychiatric disorders (monthly).
• Unit Inservice Training. Each placement unit holds its own in-service
training sessions focusing on topics specifically relevant to that unit.
• Case Conferences/Case Presentations. Externs present cases for discussion at
Team Conference Meetings. In addition, Externs may present a treatment
or evaluation case under the guidance of their supervisors.
The majority of didactics occur on Tuesdays, a required day for Externs.
Some didactics occur on other days which may or may not fall on a particular
Extern’s training days.
Supervision
Externs will receive extensive supervision on all clinical activities (individual and
group psychotherapies, psychological testing, consultation, intakes) and in a
variety of different modalities (1:1, group, in-vivo). Psychology externs can
expect to receive at least an hour of individual supervision weekly from a
licensed psychologist, who will serve as their primary supervisor either in the
Adult Outpatient Psychiatric Clinic or in CAPS. Externs will also be provided
with additional 1:1 supervision for psychological testing and in-vivo supervision
while on the Consultation-Liaison Service. Each extern will receive an additional
hour of weekly supervision, provided by an intern mentor. Externs will also
participate in a weekly group case conference led by a psychology intern or
psychology intern dyad, where they will have the opportunity to present cases
and receive feedback from their peers, as well as more advanced doctoral
candidates. To augment their training and experience, externs may also receive
additional in-vivo supervision from licensed attending psychiatrists and medical
residents.
