Matthew McMillan BVM&S, DipECVAA, MRCVS Principal Clinical Anaesthetist Queen’s Veterinary School Hospital Department of Veterinary Medicine University of Cambridge Madingley Road Cambridge CB3 0ES UK December 2015 Dear veterinary students, Small Animal Externships April/June 2016. We have an exciting opportunity for enthusiastic and hardworking veterinary students to undergo a 1st July 2015 rotating externship in small animal clinical studies for up to 10 weeks in The Queen’s Veterinary School Hospital, University of Cambridge. The externship period runs from Sunday 10 April 2016 until Sunday 19 June 2016. Our multidisciplinary hospital has European Diplomates in each of our services (soft tissue surgery, orthopaedics, internal medicine, neurology and neurosurgery, oncology, diagnostic imaging, anaesthesia and clinical and anatomical pathology). Externs will rotate through multiple services and will assist in the out of hours care of hospitalised cases and emergencies which will include some night work. We expect our externs to become integral members of the hospital team and hope they will get actively involved with case management and the running of the hospital. We are looking for dedicated and knowledgeable students in or about to enter their final year of studies (the externships are most suited to students just before graduating). Excellent spoken and written English is a pre-requisite as you will be expected to communicate to staff and students about clinical cases throughout the programme. Ideally we are looking for 5-7 externs to join us for the entire 10 week period, but we would consider people available for between 4-8 weeks if the selected weeks are situated at the beginning and the end of the period. Basic accommodation can be provided (rent free). Our own students will not be rotating through clinics at this time (they are on their elective period) so this will give externs an excellent opportunity to work alongside hospital clinicians and residents in a teaching hospital environment. If you are interested in applying for one of these positions please fill in the attached application form and get a member of your university to provide an academic (ideally clinical) reference that outlines your suitability for the program. Please also indicate which services you favour rotating through as although this cannot be guaranteed we will try to accommodate extern requests. Finally, please note that a small administration fee will be charged to successful applicants. The deadline for the initial round of applications is 31 January 2016. However additional spaces may come up so late applications may also be successful. All applications can be returned to vetextern@vet.cam.ac.uk also copying me (mwm32@cam.ac.uk).
