PSYCHOLOGY EXTERNSHIP -- CHILD AND ADOLESCENT TRACK MONTEFIORE MEDICAL CENTER ALBERT EINSTEIN COLLEGE OF MEDICINCE The goal of the Child and Adolescent Externship Track is to prepare externs to work primarily with children and adolescents and their families in an outpatient setting, including being competent to use Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) with depressed and/or suicidal adolescents (and their families). We view this externship as a “mini-internship” and our externs will be training alongside out psychology interns. As part of this externship students will increase their competency in assessing, diagnosing, formulating, and treating children and adolescents (ages 4-17) and their families, individually and in groups, using a variety of evidence-based short- and long-term psychotherapies, while also learning how to liaison with schools, foster care agencies, the Committee on Special Education, and other relevant organizations in the area. In order to do achieve this goal, externs in the Child and Adolescent Track are provided with opportunities to work with patients presenting with the full range of psychiatric disorders, many of whom are from ethnic minority groups, economically challenged, and may have comorbid medical, substance-related and/or addictive disorders. Externs will see patients in both the Child and Outpatient Psychiatry Department (COPD) and our Adolescent Depression and Suicide Program (ADSP), both of which are housed in the same office. Externs are assigned 4 individual/family cases as follows: 1 DBT patient that involves beeper coverage and participation in DBT consultation Team. 2 ADSP patients (adolescents). 1 COPD patient (child). Additionally, externs will conduct 2-3 comprehensive neuropsychological evaluations in the COPD or ADSP and 8-10 comprehensive diagnostic intakes in our ADSP. Externs will receive training in the Kiddie-Schedule for Affective Disorders and Schizophrenia (K-SADS) and other assessment instruments. We have an extensive group therapy program in both the ADSP and COPD. Externs will co-lead 2 Behavior Movement Regulation Groups. These groups are offered across multiple age groups for patients in the COPD and ADSP presenting with a broad range of psychopathology. Externs will also have an opportunity to observe and possibly co-lead one of the following groups on a limited basis: Parenting Skills Group DBT Multi-Family Skills Group DBT Graduate Group Externs receive a total of 5-6 hours of clinical supervision (individual, dyadic, and group modalities) on a weekly basis.
