PSYCHOLOGY EXTERNSHIP -- CHILD AND ADOLESCENT TRACK
MONTEFIORE MEDICAL CENTER
ALBERT EINSTEIN COLLEGE OF MEDICINCE
The goal of the Child and Adolescent Externship Track is to prepare externs to work primarily with children and adolescents and
their families in an outpatient setting, including being competent to use Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) with depressed
and/or suicidal adolescents (and their families) and Cognitive behavioral Therapy (CBT) for youth with anxiety, trauma, OCD
and disruptive behavioral disorders. We view this externship as a “mini-internship” and our externs will be training alongside our
psychology interns. As part of this externship, students will increase their competency in assessing, diagnosing, formulating,
and treating children and adolescents (ages 4-17) and their families, individually and in groups, using a variety of evidencebased short- and long-term psychotherapies, while also learning how to liaison with schools, foster care agencies, the
Committee on Special Education, and other relevant organizations in the area.
In order to do achieve this goal, externs in the Child and Adolescent Track are provided with opportunities to work with patients
presenting with the full range of psychiatric disorders, many of whom are from ethnic minority groups, economically challenged,
and may have comorbid medical, substance-related and/or addictive disorders. Over the course of the year externs will:
