Senior Physical Education Leadership Honors Program

2011-2012

General Information

1. The Junior/Senior Leaders” program is a two year commitment; failure to complete a program either

year may result in loss of honors credit, review of athletic waiver or SPUR ramifications.

2. Senior Leaders will be assigned to a new teacher each quarter.

3. Student athletes who are accepted into the Leader program will remain in class during their

season.

4. Senior P.E. Leaders Student Contract must be signed by the student & parent and returned to Mrs.

Carzoli by the required due date Thursday, September 22.

5. Community Service Hours must be completed by April 2012. An informational handout will be given

to each student.

6. Exhibiting positive leadership skills during and outside of school is imperative.

7. If the student does not follow the requirements of the program this may be grounds for dismissal.

Expectations of a Senior Leader:

1.

Be prompt to class and in proper Leader uniform daily. You are representing the BHS

P.E. Leader Program.

2.

Attendance in class is essential in the role as a Leader. P.E. make-ups should be completed for any excused absences. Poor attendance can result in probation or being dismissed from the

P.E. Leaders program.

3.

The Leader will carry out the expectations set forth by the teacher (each quarter). Leaders will be expected to participate daily with their class.

4.

Assist the teacher with class preparation. Equipment set –up & take down. Help with monitoring use of equipment. Assist with warm-up exercises, fitness testing, and spotting gymnastics skills.

5.

Be attentive and enthusiastic and interact with students. Be a mentor and role model for students to follow. Be familiar with the rules and regulations of the P.E. department.

6.

Officiate team sport activities (bring whistle when officiating).

7.

Be able to spot common errors and make corrections on basic skills. If a student is having difficulty with a skill, the leader should recognize this and assist the student.

*** If a Senior Leader is absent from their assigned class they are required to contact Mrs. Carzoli by email or phone.

Senior Leader College Visits

A Physical Education make-up is not required for College visits if the following procedure is followed:

1. A parent note must be given to Mrs. Carzoli prior to the absence.

2. After the college visit some type of confirmation (i.e. college information or parking

the college should be turned in to Mrs. Carzoli.

3.

Each Senior Leader is responsible for informing their teacher of any College visits, field trips or Pre-arranged absences.

Grading and Course Expectations

Quarter grade will be determined by: 40% Participation /daily attendance

40% Leadership evaluations

20% Written assignments/Senior Meetings

Semester grade is determined by: 40% 1

40% 2 st quarter

ND quarter

20% senior reflection essay (1st semester)

20% senior portfolio (2nd semester)

Students will be graded in the following areas: a.

Daily attendance/participation: 40% Students will receive three daily points.

Uniform-1 point daily

Required uniform includes senior leader shirt, black shorts and gym shoes.

Attitude-1 point daily

This is based on the student meeting all teacher directed class guidelines including enthusiasm, sportsmanship and cooperation.

Effort-1 point daily

This is based on the students putting forth a full effort in the activity offered. b.

Leadership evaluations: 40%

Senior Leaders will be assigned to a new teacher each quarter this will include two four week units.

At the conclusion of each four week unit a senior leader evaluation sheet will be completed by each teacher. The evaluation will cover the following categories: leadership characteristics and interpersonal skills. This information will be shared with the senior leader so progress can be monitored. The program coordinator will also observe/evaluate each senior leader during each quarter/ semester. c.

Written Assignments: 20%

Written assignments are an important aspect of the leadership program. Each quarter there will be a required written assignment.

Senior Leaders will be required to attend all senior leadership meetings during the school year.

These required meetings will be held each quarter during a lunch hour, open hour or after school. Senior leadership meetings are mandatory and a course requirement.

During 4 th quarter the leaders will attend a class field trip and senior exit meeting.

A senior reflection essay will be due prior to 1 st semester final exam.

This essay will be 20% of the semester grade . All class assignments must be typed!

Make-ups for excused absences three options: a.

Option 1: P.E. Department activity make up

The student can make up 3 daily participation points by attending the after school make up session. Make-ups will

be held the last two Wednesdays of each unit, after school from 2:15 pm-2:40 pm. b.

Option 2: Internet written assignment/P.E. written assignment

Must be typed and attach a copy of the article used. c.

Option 3: Bulletin Board make up Consult Mrs. Carzoli for specific information
