FRENCH 4B and HONORS FRENCH 4B SYLLABUS
Course Description
Students will refine the use of idioms, vocabulary, and the nuances of grammar through
creative and spontaneous communication in French. The students will read more
challenging short stories and authentic French periodicals/publications. The students
will critique and analyze materials by writing a paper using their knowledge of French.
They will read at least one novel in French. The students and teacher will communicate
primarily in French.
To receive honors credit, students will be required to fulfill additional objectives and
comply with more stringent criteria of core objectives. Honors students will also
complete an extra performance activity per quarter which reflects independent research,
involves self-reflection activities, demonstrates a depth of knowledge and
understanding, utilizes higher order thinking skills, and includes more extensive uses of
technology than the non-honors curriculum. This course will prepare students to take
the Advanced Placement exam administered in the spring.

Course Expectations
Chapters 7 - 12
Grammar
Verbs--review of all tenses in the indicative, subjunctive, and conditional moods
not covered in 4A; passé simple; passive voice
Review of pronouns and adjectives--subjects, direct and indirect objects, relative,
interrogative, demonstrative, possessive
Idiomatic usage--Faire causative, verbal idioms, use of preposition with verbs,
general idiomatic content
Culture
Historical perspective of France--general history and culture from Roman
Conquest through Renaissance; literary history of this time period; some famous
French personalities such as Vercingétorix, Clovis, Ccharlemagne, Louis IX,
Charles VII, Jeanee d'Arc, François I, Henri II, Catherine de Médicis, Diane de
Pointiers, Henri IV, etc.
Current events in the Francophone world
Field trips to places such as the Art Museum to look at French art or theaters to
see French theatrical presentations of films
Use of interactive media to communicate with French-speaking natives
Use of music and/or videos to discuss Francophone culture
Vocabulary
Appropriate vocabulary added as needed for writing or discussing of culture
topics
Sample Course Activities/Projects/Assessments
Students will look for shared elements in folklore, humor, and sayings, or repeated
themes in French stories, using approved written or online materials and will use them
in an original short story.
Honors students will compare and contrast their findings with elements of American
folklore, humor, superstition and will present their conclusions to the class in oral or
written form in French.

French 4 uses a college level text and many different authentic French texts. Students
will read many of the stories and essays in the textbook and will read a novel in French.
All of the materials used are “authentic texts,” the term used to denote printed materials
that native speakers read in daily life for information or for recreation.
The textbook includes texts and grammar reviews to strengthen the students’ reading,
writing, and speaking skills.
