DONNA CRYER, FIRST PATIENT ELECTED CHAIR OF THE
AMERICAN LIVER FOUNDATION
New York, NY:
The American Liver Foundation announced this week the
selection of Donna Cryer as Chair of the Foundation Board of Directors. Mrs.
Cryer will be the first patient to hold the office and the first female chair since
the founding of the organization in 1976.
Mrs. Cryer has a long history of distinguished service in the liver community
beginning with her 1994 liver transplant made necessary from primary
schlerosing cholangitis. In addition to being an American Liver Foundation
board member, she served as a patient affairs specialist at United Network for
Organ Sharing from 1996 to 2000 and served on the membership and
professional standards committee from 2002 to 2005. Mrs. Cryer’s passionate
patient advocacy includes her current service of five-year term as a patient
representative to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. She served on the
agency’s Gastrointestinal Advisory Committee in 2010.
As she moves into the chair role, Mrs. Cryer said “I plan to use my experience as
a person who has faced a serious liver condition to shape the work of the

Mrs. Cryer is chief executive officer of CryerHealth, a healthcare consultancy
based in Washington, D.C., providing advocacy and alliance development
expertise to top pharmaceutical, biotech, and diagnostic companies, as well as
the largest patient and physician associations in the United States and abroad.
She is dedicated to ensuring that the voices and views of patients and
physicians are heard in healthcare decision making. She frequently blogs on
patient advocacy issues under the name, DCPatient.
An alumna of Harvard and Georgetown Law, Mrs. Cryer frequently speaks on
the topics of patient advocacy and personalized medicine. She has been
featured on CNN, Fox News, CBS Evening News, and NBC News.
Mrs. Cryer generously serves a number of non-profit healthcare organizations in
addition to the ALF. She currently is on the boards Howard University’s Women’s
Health Institute Advisory Committee and the Mid-Atlantic Chapter of the
Healthcare Businesswomen’s Association. She is a member of the Women
Business Leaders of the U.S. Health Care Industry Foundation, the American
Society of Association Executives, Alliance to Strengthen FDA, Food & Drug Law
Institute, and the Virginia Bar Association.
Mrs. Cryer is married to Dr. Dennis R. Cryer and resides in Washington, DC.
