Course Description
In Band III (Honors) the student will perform level IV music in concert, competitions, and
festivals. The student will demonstrate appropriate advanced instrumental techniques as required
by ensemble music, the study of solo literature, and the study and preparation of etudes at a IV
level.
Course Objectives
A. Perform on instruments, alone and with others, a varied repertoire of music.
B. Perform level IV music in concert, competitions, and festivals.
C. Perform modal, and chromatic scales for two octaves (wind instruments and mallet
percussion instruments). Indefinite pitch percussion students will demonstrate proficiency of
26 essential rudiments.
D. Perform whole-tone and pentatonic scales.
E. Perform complex rhythmic patterns found in the music literature studies at the IV level
including advanced syncopated and complex rhythms.
F. Demonstrate control of dynamic levels while maintaining appropriate tone control as
required by the style of music.
G. Perform level III-IV music as a member of a chamber ensemble(s) as well as large
ensemble(s) and as a soloist.
H. Demonstrate appropriate advanced instrumental techniques as required by ensemble music,
the study of solo literature, and the study and preparation of etudes at a III-IV level.
I. Demonstrate an advanced, mature tone quality.
J. Improvise melodies, variations, and accompaniments.
K. Improvise original melodies in a variety of styles, over given chord progressions, each in a
consistent style, meter, and tonality.
L. Sight read music at level III with 80% accuracy.
M. Interpret nonstandard notations symbols used by some twentieth-century composers.
N. Listen to, analyze, and describe music.
O. Exhibit increased awareness of the physics of the instrument as well as care and
maintenance.
P. Demonstrate the ability to analyze form (i.e., fugue, sonata, and symphonic etc.), chord
structures and progressions, and 12-tone row and atonal music of the twentieth century.
Q. Conduct from a full musical score after preparation and analysis of the musical elements
including all transpositions and clefs.
R. Exhibit refinement of intonation and advanced discrimination of pitch.
S. Exhibit awareness of blend and balance within the ensemble.
T. Demonstrate advanced understanding of interval ear training.
U. Evaluate music and music performances.
V. Evaluate his/her own music performances and those of others.
W. Evaluate a given musical work in terms of its aesthetic qualities and explain the means it uses
to evoke feelings and emotions.

Student must provide his/her own instrument, reeds, valve oil, sticks, etc. as needed.
Student must purchase his/her own band shoes and gloves as chosen by the director.
A "number two" pencil.
Student will purchase a band T-shirt.
Course Requirements
A. Student will be prepared with instrument and/or materials every day for class.
B. Participation in all performances.
C. Student will practice at home as evidenced with a weekly practice chart signed by the parent as
required by the director.
D. Student must receive a grade of 70 or better to receive credit for this course.
E. Student must be in attendance __________ days.
F. Student will know scales and will audition for All-County and All-District Bands.
G. Student will assist other students in the preparation of their music.
H. Student will write a four-page research paper on the composer of his/her choice.
I. Student will perform at least one solo for a group within the year.
J. Student will sight-read grade V/VI music with 80% accuracy.
K. Student will perform all major and 2 forms of minor (pure, harmonic) scales and arpeggios.
