Ufa is the capital of Bashkortostan Autonomous Republic, in
the Southern Urals. The name Bashkortostan comes from the
Bashkir peoples who lived there for many centuries. The Bashkir
were very close to Tatars, also Muslim. The city of Ufa was
founded by Russians in 1574 as a fort. During the 17th-18th
centuries it became the industrial center of the Southern Urals.
Administratively it belonged to Kazan and then to the Orenburg
region. In 1922 it became the capital of Bashkir Republic of the
USSR.
The region is home to a wealth of natural resources, and in
particular is a significant player in the oil market. It also is active
in oil refining and manufacturing and in visiting Ufa, one has the
sense that it is one of the wealthier regions in Russia.
The Bashkir are famous for breeding horses. They were once a
nomadic people, the horse the most important animal to them.
There is horse factory near Ufa where they breed horses
recognized around the world. Their horses take part in derbies and
win, explaining why one such horse can cost up to $ 2 million.
The Bashkir also make a national drink from horses’ milk called
