Abstract
The Dez catchment is in Khuzestan province and belongs to Persian Gulf and
Oman Sea catchments. Dez River is one of the main tributaries of Karun
River, one of the most important river in Iran, collecting water from a vast area
in Lorestan, Isfahan and Khuzestan provinces and transferring them into
Karun River.
Dez River has 2 main and some small tributaries. The main tributaries are Ab
Bakhtiyary (Ab Zalaki) and Sezar rivers. Bakhtiyary River originated from
Bakhtiyary mountains, runs in the east direction and joins Sezar River which is
originated from north of Loristan province.
Dez River supplies a major part of the irrigation water demand of Khuzestan
province, which is enhanced by the construction of Dez Dam. The river, after
the dam, enters Khuzestan plain and Dezful plain and eventually joins Karun
River at Band-e-Ghir. The river regime is mainly snowmelt- rainfall.
The objectives of the present hydrological studies are, estimation and
determination of monthly and annual discharges, flow duration curve, floods
with different return periods at the entrance of the dam reservoir which are
essential to performing sedimentation studies and sediment management.
Key words: Dez River, Dez watershed, Khuzestan province, hydrological
