The [sponsoring organization] will host the Humanities Montana Speakers Bureau program “Native
American Studies: Pipe Carrier” with Michael Turley on [date of program]. The program will be at
[location and time of program]. The presentation is free and open to the public. Partial funding for the
Speakers Bureau program is provided by a legislative grant from Montana’s Cultural Trust and the
National Endowment for the Humanities.
Turley presents the basic concepts of the Native American Pipe Ceremony as practiced by the
Assiniboine Medicine Lodge. Turley incorporates the history of the ceremony including cultural studies,
folklore, and philosophy through the use of Native American language and the extensive use of artifacts,
which include traditional tools, stones, furs, and his father’s pipe, which has been passed down through
the generations. In addition, Turley shares folk tradition via oral stories. Singing and hand-carved Native
American flute playing are included in the presentation.
Turley was raised in Montana and is a graduate of Rocky Mountain College, with a B.A. in art education
and a business minor. He has worked as a counselor at Yellowstone Boys and Girls Ranch, taught in the
bush of Alaska, and is currently employed at School District 2 in Billings.
