THE [SPONSORING ORGANIZATION] HOSTS HUMANITIES MONTANA SPEAKERS BUREAU
PROGRAM “THE GLOBAL CIVICS INITIATIVE” WITH STEPHEN MALY
[City–date]
The [sponsoring organization] will host the Humanities Montana Speakers Bureau program “The Global
Civics Initiative” with Stephen Maly, on [date of program]. The program will be at [location and time of
program]. The presentation is free and open to the public. Partial funding for the Speakers Bureau
program is provided by a legislative grant from Montana’s Cultural Trust and the National Endowment for
the Humanities.
What are the rights and responsibilities of citizenship in the 21st century? How can we Montanans best
position ourselves—as individuals, families, and enterprising communities—to adjust to the challenges
and opportunities of globalization? Global Civics aims to restore an old fashioned subject by combining
an analysis of government structures and processes with key aspects of history, economics, geography,
and international law—all with a distinctly Montana focus.
Stephen Maly of Helena, Montana runs the Television Montana public affairs network (TVMT) and
Special Projects for Helena Civic Television. For the past three years, he has hosted the Global
Positioning and Global Civics series on TVMT and Montana PBS. Maly’s formal education is in
international affairs, with degrees from the University of Colorado and Johns Hopkins University. He’s
worked as a research analyst for the 49th Parallel Institute at MSU and for the Montana legislature. Maly
was a Fellow of the Institute for Current World Affairs in Canada and has produced a number of
documentary films and publications.
