FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
THE --YOUR SPONSORING ORGANIZATION– HOSTS HUMANITIES MONTANA SPEAKERS
BUREAU PROGRAM “THE CHANGING IMAGE OF AMERICAN INDIANS IN FILM” WITH RICHARD
ELLIS
[City-Date]
The --your sponsoring organization-- will host Humanities Montana Speakers Bureau program “The
Changing Image of American Indians in Film” with Richard Ellis on --date of program--. The program will
be at --location of program-- at --time of program--. The presentation is free and open to the public. Partial
funding for the Speakers Bureau program is provided by a legislative grant from Montana’s Cultural Trust
and from the National Endowment for the Humanities.
Richard Ellis looks at how Hollywood’s portrayal of American Indians influences public opinion and how
movies reflect changing public attitudes toward Native Americans. He also shares a collection of visual
images from movies that provide a catalog of inaccuracies and stereotypes. If a picture is worth a
thousand words, then imagine the influence a motion picture has on the public. Ellis invites discussion
about whether filmmakers have an obligation to provide historical and cultural accuracy in films about
Native Americans.
Writer and lecturer Richard Ellis, of Stevensville, Mont., holds a Ph.D. in Western American history and
has taught at Murray State University, University of New Mexico, and Fort Lewis College.
