Rowan County FFA Scholastic Heifer Award Purpose: To award one beef heifer calf to a deserving high school student so that they may learn how to properly care and manage a beef animal. Goals of the Scholarship: 1. To provide one deserving student with a purebred beef heifer 2. To provide a positive learning experience for one high school FFA member 3. To improve the genetics of the beef industry by properly planning and implementing reproduction schedules and selections utilizing artificial insemination technologies. 4. To provide a supervised agricultural experience for one high school student 5. To provide an opportunity to develop responsibility, leadership, and work ethics while caring for livestock. Requirements: 1 current transcript in a sealed envelope 1 letter of recommendation from someone other than the FFA Advisor 1 completed application 1 resume Interview with the selection committee Responsibilities: The winner of the scholarship will receive one purebred heifer calf that they are the sole owner of and responsible for its management. This heifer calf is to be mated to a genetically superior purebred bull that is selected in cooperation with the chapter FFA Advisor. This heifer will be fed, vaccinated, and managed on a regular schedule with the student assuming 100% financial responsibility once the award has been distributed. The FFA Chapter advisor will make periodic visits to the students project to track progress. The first heifer calf that is born will be given back to the FFA Chapter to be used as the scholarship animal for the next year’s students. Any male animals are the property of the student; and any heifer calves after the first heifer calf is the property of the student.
