The Pannonian Plant Biotechnology Association (PPBA) is organizing a workshop on Plant Breeding and Biotechnology in the Great Pannonian Region – Present and Future Needs in Osijek, Beli Manastir, Croatia April 7-9, 2008 First circular The main topic of the workshop will be to identify and discuss the role of biotechnology in satisfying present and future production needs in agriculture of the Great Pannonian Region. This region had historically enormous potential for agricultural production; its food production capacity is approximately 50% higher than the needs of the population. However, the stability of food production is a major barrier to developing competitive agriculture at the beginning of the 21st century. Furthermore, there is recent dilemma whether to supply customers in the feed, food and export markets or to supply the burgeoning biofuel and biopharmaceutical industries. The participants at the workshop would like to introduce results and potential tools in the field of plant breeding and biotechnology to improve knowledge of common traits for food/feed in agricultural crops and/or to increase the capacity of agricultural production for nonfood (biofuel) purposes. During this workshop the PPBA would like to communicate its main goals, ideas and messages. The Association welcomes everybody who is prepared to advance these aims. Efforts will be made to discover and introduce potential members who are committed to plant biotechnology research and who will undertake to propagate science-based results. The workshop will be held in Osijek and Beli Manastir, Croatia, to mark 130th anniversary of the Agricultural Institute Osijek.
