UNITED STATES NAVY FLEETS
Pacific Fleet
Renamed from the US Fleet, Feb. 1, 1941.
Atlantic Fleet
Established Feb. 1, 1941.
Asiatic Fleet
Small. Ceased to exist Feb. 1942.
On March 15, 1943, Adm. Ernest J. King directed that these forces be designated as numbered fleets, those in the Atlantic
being given even number and those in the Pacific odd numbers.
Third Fleet
Formerly South Pacific Force, established March 15, 1943.
Fourth Fleet
Formerly South Atlantic Force, established March 15, 1943, disestablished Apr. 15, 1945.
Fifth Fleet
Formerly Central Pacific Force, established Apr. 26, 1944.
During the last part of the Pacific war, the Pacific Fleet’s principal striking force was alternately designated the Third Fleet
under the command of Adm. William H. Halsey and then designated the Fifth Fleet when it was commanded by Adm.
Raymond A. Spruance. This dual arrangement permitted each fleet commander to concentrate on planning the next
operation while his alternate was conducting the current one.
Seventh Fleet
Formerly Southwest Pacific Force, established Feb. 19, 1943. It was primarily concerned with
amphibious campaigns with Gen. Douglas MacArthur.
Eighth Fleet
Formerly US Naval Forces, NW African Waters, established Mar. 15, 1943, disestab. Apr. 15, 1945.
Tenth Fleet
Established May 20, 1943, disestablished June 12, 1945. It was a shore-based command set up to
direct American antisubmarine operations in the Atlantic.
Twelfth Fleet
Established Mar. 15, 1943. Formerly called the US Naval Forces, Europe.
