King directed that these forces be designated as numbered fleets, those in the Atlantic being given even number and those in the Pacific odd numbers. Third Fleet Formerly South Pacific Force, established March 15, 1943. Fourth Fleet Formerly South Atlantic Force, established March 15, 1943, disestablished Apr. 15, 1945. Fifth Fleet Formerly Central Pacific Force, established Apr. 26, 1944. During the last part of the Pacific war, the Pacific Fleet’s principal striking force was alternately designated the Third Fleet under the command of Adm. William H. Halsey and then designated the Fifth Fleet when it was commanded by Adm. Raymond A. Spruance. This dual arrangement permitted each fleet commander to concentrate on planning the next operation while his alternate was conducting the current one. Seventh Fleet Formerly Southwest Pacific Force, established Feb. 19, 1943. It was primarily concerned with amphibious campaigns with Gen. Douglas MacArthur. Eighth Fleet Formerly US Naval Forces, NW African Waters, established Mar. 15, 1943, disestab. Apr. 15, 1945. Tenth Fleet Established May 20, 1943, disestablished June 12, 1945. It was a shore-based command set up to direct American antisubmarine operations in the Atlantic. Twelfth Fleet Established Mar. 15, 1943. Formerly called the US Naval Forces, Europe.
