RESEARCH PROBLEM STATEMENT
Asset inventory data collection is an essential part of an asset management plan. State departments
of transportation (DOT’s) have been collecting this data for decades but new technologies and
methods are now available giving states many options to consider. The use of new technology has
made data collection more efficient and easier to analyze but it may not be suitable for all assets.
Manual data collection is still required for many roadway features due to equipment limitations.
Research is needed to determine the state of the art and best practices in the collection, processing
and managing of asset inventory data collection.

RESEARCH OBJECTIVE
The objective of this research is to determine the best practices used by DOT’s to collect, process,
manage roadway asset inventory data. It is anticipated the following tasks will be involved:

Conduct a literature review of research on this topic.
Conduct a survey of state DOT’s to identify methods used and best practices.
Evaluate the various practices to determine which are most efficient and effective.
Establish recommendations for the use of the reported practices.

VII.
URGENCY, PAYOFF POTENTIAL, AND IMPLEMENTATION
This proposed project has high urgency as DOT’S are currently or soon will be developing or
refining their Asset Management Plan to adapt to MAP-21 performance requirements. The research
findings could result in a significant cost and time savings by improving the asset data collection
process and analysis procedures.
