7. NATIVE VEGETATION
Native vegetation is important in the
Alpine Resorts for:

The following tips may be useful.
Maintenance of threatened
species and/or communities
Protection of habitat
Soil stability
Softening the impact of
buildings in the landscape
Providing habitat for threatened
species

A planning permit is required to
remove, lop or destroy native
vegetation (including dead vegetation)
under Clause 52.17 Native Vegetation.
All permit applications that include
native vegetation removal are
assessed against the Native
Vegetation Framework.

Native Vegetation Framework
The Native Vegetation Framework
aims to achieve a net gain in extent
and quality of native vegetation. The
Framework has a three step process:



avoid adverse impacts on
native vegetation
minimise the extent of native
vegetation removal (if native
vegetation removal cannot be
avoided)
offset appropriately
The principle is to retain native
vegetation wherever possible through
careful site responsive design. Where
native vegetation removal is required
compensatory planting (offsets) will be
necessary. This may be off site but
must be discussed and agreed with
the Alpine Resort Management Boards
and the Department of Sustainability
and Environment.


Retain good specimens of trees
and large shrubs
Design your development to
provide for existing trees
Use only plants of local genetic
provenance to each Resort used
for revegetation
Provide for trees with spreading
crowns
Make allowance in your building
layout for drip line and snow laden
limbs
Retain and reuse the top soil on
the site
Design for low maintenance and
water conservation
To ensure a high survival rate
harden plants in the environment in
which they are going to be planted
prior to planting.
Consider the impact some tree
roots can have on foundations and
design future tree root zones
accordingly
Consider appropriate access to a
building to prevent trails and
consequential vegetation removal
and soil erosion.
