York: W. W. Norton & Co., 2007.) Available at IMU Bookstore.
Course Description
This course provides an overview of the logic and techniques involved in
analyzing and interpreting empirical data. Methods for displaying data
graphically and for describing characteristics of data will be covered in
the first part of the course dealing with descriptive statistics. The second
part of the course includes topics in elementary probability theory and
sampling, forming a basis for techniques of statistical inference. The
problem of inference, attempting to make generalizations that go beyond
the data at hand, is the focus of the third part of the course.
Course Requirements







required attendance at discussion sections (over 3 absences—grade
reduced)
assigned readings
quizzes on Fridays (open book, no makeups)
home assignments from textbook (for self study and review in
discussion sections with TA)
3 competency exams (open book, in class, graded pass/fail with one
chance to make up a failure)
3 application exams (open book, evenings)
5 discussion section quizzes (open book, in discussion sections, see
schedule below)
Discussion Sections
These are scheduled with the course TA for the purpose of answering
questions from lecture, reviewing homework problems and competency
exams, and taking quizzes—attendance required.

Course Grades
Final grades are based on the quizzes (25%), the three minimum
competency exams (10% each), and the three application exams (15%
each). In addition, any student who either passes all three competency
exams and receives a combined score of at least 30% correct on the three
application exams, or receives a combined score of at least 50% correct
on all three application exams will be guaranteed a grade of at least C- in
the course. If neither of these conditions is satisfied, failure to pass one
or more competency exams will result in a drop of one full letter grade
per exam failed.
