Project II - Biomes
Purpose :
1. Describe how plants determine the name of a biome.
2. Explain how temperature and precipitation determine which plants grow in an area.
3. Explain how latitude and altitude affect which plants grow in an area.
4. Name two threats to the world’s biomes.
5. Describe the plant and animal life and the adaptations that help them survive in
a biome.
6. Create a climatogram of biome and compare to the city of Detroit.
Procedure:
1. Form a group of three –four team members. One member will select a biome from
those provided by teacher.
2. Working as a team, students will research information on their biome:
a) description & characteristics of biomes (light, temperature, space, water, air,
nutrients)
b) water movement through
c) carbon oxygen cycle
d) nitrogen cycle
e) countries included in biome (map)
f) plants that make up biome and adaptations
g) animals that make up the biome and their adaptations
h) decomposers that make up the biome and their adaptations
i) Food chains and food webs
j) environmental effects and threats to the biomes
k) climatogram of your biome and compare it to Detroit
k) unusual facts and tidbits
Use a minimum of three different sources for research and document.
3. Create a diorama (scene in shoebox or display box), pop-up book, game or other
creative visual to demonstrate/ explain research found on biome.
4. Create a brochure for your biome which includes all of the above information.
(50 pts EC)
5. Present to class on Wednesday, October 28, 2009. Sign up for time slot!
